Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

In Alpha Five, you create a "container" called a database that holds your .dbf files (that are called "tables" in Alpha Four).

Create a folder to hold your work and copy your .dbf files to that folder. Start Alpha Five and create a new database in Alpha Five. Navigate to the folder you created, provide a name for your database, in the next screen select "Create an empty database (and click the next button), at the next screen select "Add an existing table or set" and click Finish.

The Add Table/Set window should pop up with your .dbf files showing (remember, in A5, they are now "tables").

After you've selected one, click the open button and you'll find yourself at the control panel with your "table" showing. To add others to your "database", right click in the control panel white space, and select "Add table/Set".

copy your A4 .dbf files into the folder where you started your A5 application, right click on the white space in the control panel Tables/Sets screen, select Add Table/Set... and your copied .dbf files should show up to be added. You'll have to repeat for each one you want to add.

is it going to matter that for the one database i have 3 forms and each form a report under it?
do you know how i would get a file out of the database to one form or another form?
          does that make sense?

RE: importing info from alpha 4 into alpha 5

            Hi Kim,

In moving from Alpha 4 to Alpha 5 you will only be able to bring the actual data (dbf and memo filees) only. All your forms and reports in A4 will not carry over to A5. In A5 the entire collection of tables (databases in A4) reports, forms, scripts, etc is called a database. Each individual table (the *.dbf file) in A5 has associated dictionary files. A5 automatically creates these 'associated file' for you when you add or create a table in the A5 database. These dictionary files are where the form, browses, reports, etc. for the individual tables are kept.

Long and short of it, you can bring your data over to A5 seamlessly, but nothing else. All forms, reports, scripts, etc will have to be redone in A5.

            Good luck,
            Jim

RE: importing info from alpha 4 into alpha 5

Be careful. If you are reading the same tables (not copies) in both A4 and A5 remember that A5 will not maintain indexes in A4 and A4 will not maintain A5 indexes.

The implication of this is that if you use A5 to add a record to a table and you then open the table using A4 you will not see the record until you update your indexes manually or create a query list.

So using the same tables in two programs is (IMHO) not particularly desirable although it is possible.
