Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can I copy an object from one database to another

Hello... a newbie here. Have had much experience with a variety of database tools, but am brand new to A5. I am working with a co-developer on a large project. He is the keeper of the development environment, and I have a copy of it to work on at my place. We are not networked at all. I presumed I could work on this db copy, while he continues to do his stuff on the main db. Then I would bring my copy to his office, and he would simply copy/import my new objects into the main db.

So I've been trying to discover how I can copy an object (could be most anything: a report, form, a toolbar, etc.) from one database to another, and have been unable to see a way to do this. From the Control Panel, if I select an object, there is no copy function available... no copy button, no copy on the shortcut menu, even Ctl-C followed by Ctl-V does nothing.

I looked into the Import function, but it appears only to deal with importing of tables. I must be missing something... I imagine there must be a way to do this. Much appreciate your help.

    I copy forms often.

Right click on form, select copy.

Click on File, open new database, go to form tab, right click, paste, and select a table to assign the form to and its done.

    Reports work similarly.

Layouts for tables are contained in the table.ddd, table.ddm and table. ddx files. Similarly, layouts for sets are contained in the set.set, set.sem and set.sex files. If your partner is developing a form for table1 while you develop another form for table1 on your computer, overlaying your ddd,ddm and ddx files to his computer will erase his work.

I think you can get around this by creating the database on your computer under a different name. Then copy and paste it to his computer (still under the same name that's on your computer) and then he can copy your layouts from your database (now on his computer) to the master database (also on his computer) as suggested in Tom's reply.

Gotta admit I haven't tried it, but seems it oughta work.

You may wish to check out Ira Perlows Copyapp Alpha Five program. Put "Copyapp" in the search tool on this board and you will find info on it, plus a link to Ira's web site. It doesn't do forms etc (Ira possibly has such an app... ask him) but it DOES do scripts and functions. More importantly it COMPARES them, even if they are named the same.. check it out.

Stephen - you might also want to try Finiens Utilities - I personaly like them better. You can download it/them from Dr. Waynes site - learn alpha.com.

            Thanks everyone!
The usual shortcut-menu copy and paste works just fine, just not on the toolbars. I can live with that. It was the much more labor-intensive forms/reports that had me worried.
