Default I want larger tool bar items

Change can be difficult at times. I have a new Windows 2000 pc and the Alpha5 toolbar is much smaller than on my Windows 98. I can make the font size of the tables, reports, forms, etc, larger, but don't know how to make my toolbar, messages, and table names and icons larger. Can someone tell me how to manage this?

    Thanks!

    Wanda:

The reason that everything appears smaller is that you have your video card set at a higher resolution.

Did you get the same size monitor? Do you need the higher resolution? Sometimes, users require the higher resolution, like those using Computer Aided Design software.

If resolution is not an issue, right click on an empty area of your desktop, select 'properties'. When the dialog box with all the tabs opens, select 'settings' and drag the 'screen area' slider to the left, one notch. Click on 'OK' to save your settings. You may have to restart your computer, but most video cards allow you to change your settings without restarting.

If the buttons in A5 are still too small, repeat the aboves steps, until you are content.

    Hi Craig,

I did as you said, but the computer insists on going back to high resolution...I think the IT department controls this, now, too. I will check it out with them.

I do belive your suggestions would work on a stand-alone pc.

    Thanks!

Stand-alone or network: no difference for this issue. I think you had it right when you suspected IT of maintaining control of the right to adjust settings, but then didn't they make you a power user? And don't power users have rights to alter setup? And do you feel different now that you are a power user or are you just the same old wanda (just kidding).

    Wanda,

Hi. I have a similar problem with the toolbars and have been asking for the last three versions of Alpha Five for the ability to show larger icons; on the toolbars, in the control panel and for use in form controls. The problem seems to be the actual size of the icons included and Alpha Five's inability to "grow" or "shrink" them on it's own.

I typically run my monitor somewhere between 1600x1200 and 1800x1440. I suppose that I really don't need it set that high, but the clarity is so nice and the desktop is four to five times larger than conventional resolutions (lots of fields in my browses!), allowing me to see entire documents, high quality graphics, etc. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The biggest problem that I had was reading the font in the code editor -- it's TINY. The good news is that version 5 will have user-selectable fonts (the new expression builder will also be configurable that way).

Anywho, for the moment you're stuck with small icons and fonts... You might want to check (if you haven't already done so) to see that "Large Fonts" are selected in the Windows 2000 Display Properties; that helps a little.

    Regards,

Thanks for your input, Geoffrey. I have selected larger icons in the Win2000 properties, but it doesn't change Alpha icons or table, form, report lists, or even this message board text.

So, is the consensus that Windows 2000 was made for really young people who have exceptionally eye sight?! (Same idea as TV Script writers being too old to write if they are 30 or older?!!!)

I hope the new version takes care of this mennacing problem, as you suggest.

Hey, William...no, I don't feel any different being a power user...I feel Big Brother breathing very heavily down my neck in that I don't even have the control to back up my own work, anymore! If I had a few months savings, I'd go out on my own and start consulting with Alpha, at this point.

Rest assured, I'm the same ol' me - the same ol' me with less power over my work - even 'though I'm a power user!! I wonder what I was before this new pc came along?!

    Wanda,

I am a dangerous radical. I have *made friends* with my IT people even going so far as to write a couple of utilities for them in A5 about which they have now started to become curious.

They responded by giving me superuser priviliges!

I think of myself as a computerized termite attacking the the frame house of centralization.

    Might work for you,
    Bill

Good for you :) I, too, am in the good graces of the IT folk - primarily because I allow my alter ego (Mathilda McGillicutty) to speak up for me. She frequently paves the way for my often-times "whiny" requests, as if she were a two year old who doesn't know how to be socially adept at disguising begging. I'll seek Mathilda on the IT folk.
