Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Be honest!

Is V4.5 worth upgrading too or should I wait till V5?

Ever have any index problems? In 4.5 they're gone.

Honestly, I have had very little problems with indexes in v 4 but maybe what i have developed has not been abused as much as others.

You can't afford to NOT get v4.5! The cost of 4.5 is 100% applied to v5. What's there to loose?

Ya make a very convincing point! Not only will I become a better database designer but I will save my company 10 billion dollars. Thats how much the total savings would be if we upgraded all the pirated CD's I made(just kidding).

Seriously. What is the general feel about the product and what it has to offer.

            Jamin,

If you have an app that is running smoothly in v4.03, the update to v4.5 may not show much change. I initially stayed with 4.03 for some time. But since moving to v4.5 I noticed a slight improvement in speed, many fewer problems with indexes, and the addition of new features that have proven very useful. An example is the allow_editing() function with returns T of F depending on where editing is allowed or not (F3 toggle). Mode_get() wasn't always doing what I needed.

There have been some new issues with v4.5 because some things work slightly differently, but they seem very rare. What finally changed my mind was the fact that the purchase price can be 100% applied to v5, so why not?

I have attached the pdf file that comes with v4.5 that shows all of the changes. It is more detailed than the information on the Alpha web site.

No luck. I guess because of all the virus attacks lately, either the Alpha site or my server has file transfers blocked.

4.5 is faster. The bigger the application, the bigger the improvement. On my biggest application the increase is dramatic.

There are one or two small incompatibilities so you must test your application in 4.5 before letting the world have it.

                            Bill,

A 'need for speed' question, sparked by your enthusiasm for 4.5's performance:

I've got a data file of 800,000+ records, about 1k/record. One of its many cute features is a little zip code radius thing (many thanks to Tommy Thompson & friends!) which returns all records within x miles radius on zip centers (I give users 2 choices, 25 & 50 miles).

When a new start point is chosen, A5 may take 3-5 minutes to return the records w/in the radius (running on a recent-vintage Dell notebook, nothing special hardware-wise).

Would A5 4.5 shorten that 3-5 min cycle appreciably? If you need more clues, I'll try to supply them (truth in advertising: Geoff Hollander would probably warn you I can be dumb as a post).

                              Greg:

The truth is I don't know. There is supposed to be a big speed improvement where there lots of calculated fields. Perhaps this has implications for your zip code application.

I do *not* have lots and lots of calc fields so I can't assess this. However, I have lots of complicated queries and they run dramatically faster. It is really noticable.

You now possess my entire experience base on this issue.

The thing is, 4.5 is free because its price is applicable against the upgrade to version 5 which we are all extremely likely to purchase.
