Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Positioning objects

    How come I can, in the OnInit event of a form:

    button1.object.top = .5

    but I can't:

    browse1.object.top = .5

    The code is obviously written into Alpha Five, yet I cannot execute it.

    Tom,
    A slight change to include the form object reference and you code works

    parentform:browse1.object.top = .5

    Put the following code on a button and you can see where the browse is located.

    lft = parentform:Browse1.object.left
    tp = parentform:Browse1.object.top
    ui_msg_box("Position","left = "+alltrim(str(lft,8,4))+" Inch"+chr(13)+"Top = "+alltrim(str(tp,8,4))+" inch")

      When I use the Xbasic Explorer it gives me the same code you post. Maybe that's what you said. "Executing" the snippet in the interactive window does not generate an error.

      Does the code not execute properly on your form?
      There can be only one.

        RE: Positioning objects

        Right, Stan, it causes a lockup condition. I have the code on a button for testing purposes on the same form, so I am quite certain the the object address is correct, or else the button wouldn't get repositioned. It is just the browse that will not reposition. Neither will a subform respond to the command.

        When I implemented Jerry's suggestion, I encounter lockup.

        I just tried the command in the interactive window. The result i got was much different. The code executes and appears to set the object position, although I do not see the object itself being repositioned.

        Interactively, if I

        parentform:form1.object.top = .5

        then

        ?parentform:form1.object.top

        returns

        = 0.50000

        Interestingly enough, the button code

        obtop = parentform:form1.object.top
        trace.writeln(str(obtop, 4, 2))

        does return the current top position of the object. But the following, just to confirm again,

        parentform:form1.object.top = 0.50

        causes lockup.

          Tom

          Attached is a little app that shows how the code works. Open the form "Object Test" and click the button and enter different values. It works fine on my computer with version 4.5.

          Now, if you are opening you form as a dialog, this may not work as expected.

            Thanks for that workup, Jerry. I believe it does confirm that the problem is with my copy of Alpha Five and/or my installation. Your applications locks upon loading as well.

            I suppose I should try reinstalling A5, easy enough to do.

              After a reinstall, still no go. I'm using ver 4.03, might that be part of my problem?

                  Tom,

                  The problem is a bug in version 4.01. This problem was fixed in version 4.5 and is covered in the whats new for version 4.5, excerpt below

                  "Setting an Object's Height and Width Property
                  Each object on a form has a width and a height property that you can change via Xbasic. Previously, if you
                  changed these properties for embedded browse, embedded form, or tab objects, Alpha Five would crash.
                  This is now fixed. In addition each object has a top and left property. For certain objects such as multi-state
                  buttons and radio buttons, changing these properties did not change the position of the object on the form."

                  Another reason to upgrade. I personally resisted for a while, but now find the fixes and new features are very useful.

                      Wow..thanks for doing the research I should have done :)

                      That will save me from banging my head agaist the wall anymore. It's pretty sore now as it is.

                      Again, kudos to this community for being so helpful.
