Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    subelement is of different type

    I am trying to enter a record on a form and if the form is in enter mode write a record to another table. The first table with the form is structured as follows:
    "Associations"
    Association Character 30
    Complex Character 5
    Cutoffamt Numeric 10,2
    These are the only fields on the form and the following script is attached to the ondepart event of Complex field. The table that I want to write to is as follows
    "Chargeamount"
    Itemcode Character 13
    Description Character 15
    Amount Numeric 7,2
    Complex Character 5
    Onetime Character 2
    When the script is run this error is reported:
    Error: t.complex subelement is of different type

    dim t as p
    dim tcomplex as c
    tcomplex=complex.value
    t=table.open("Chargeamount")
    t.enter_begin()
    t.itemcode=alltrim(tcomplex)+"100"
    t.complex=tcomplex
    t.description ="Condo Fee"
    t.amount=0
    t.onetime=""
    end

    I must have worked on this to long, I dont see what the problem could be. Maybe old age is getting the best of me.

    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

    Lloyd,

    If you're desire is to write to 2 tables at the same time, I beileve there is an article on Dr. Wayne's site describing this procedure. (or similar) Not sure if it applies to this situation but it might be worth a looksee.

      I am trying to write to both tables. Only at slightly different times. I will check the article and see if it helps.

        I tried the method described in the article but I still get the same error. Not sure what to try now.

          Lloyd, two suggestions:

          1) doublecheck the structure of the second table. The error message you're getting can mean that you are trying to store numeric data in a char field, or vice versa...

          2) change the name of the pointer to the second table. Instead of 't', use 'tbl'... so that t.complex = tcomplex is avoided. These statements are so similar Alpha Five may be having trouble distinguishing them... (just a guess, but I've gotten a bit paranoid about keeping thing separate and simple).

            Lloyd:
            if your form is based on a set.
            This is what I do.
            dim vcomplex as c
            dim vamount as n
            dim vitemcode as c
            t1=table.current(1)
            t2=table.current(2)
            var->vcomplex=t1.complex
            vitemcode=alltrim(t1.itemcode)+"100"

            t2.change_begin()
            t2.complex=var->vcomplex
            t2.itemcode=var->vitemcode
            t2.change.end()

            you might have to check the mode status and change the change_begin to enter_begin.

              in addition to a mismatch between field types, you can get
              that error if the t.complex field is a calculated field.

                you also should use the debugger to see what
                tcomplex
                has been set to. for character fields i tend to use
                the .text property, not the .value property.

                you may want to make sure that tcomplex is no larger
                than 5 characters, by writing
                tcomplex=left(complex.text,5)
