Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Repeating Data in one field

I have the following fields in a voting list database:
    HSNUM
    SFX
    APTNO
    STREET

In another part of the the data base I have aone field called MAILADDRESS. Is there a way to write an expression that will combime the above automatically without retyping each field when entering new data.? Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Repeating Data in one field

You probably want to look at FIELD RULES, DATA ENTRY, Default Mode, Simple Default Expression. This will allow you to modify the MAILADDRESS should you so desire.

You default expression will depend on the data types of your fields (can't add apples and oranges). If they are all character fields it would be:

    HSNUM+SFX+APTNO+STREET

    if APTNO is strictly numeric:

    HSNUM+SFX+str(APTNO,?)+STREET

Be careful that space is allowed in the MAILADDRESS to accomodate the total of the lengths of the other fields, or you will lose data.
    There can be only one.

RE: Repeating Data in one field

I often use this in various apps. You may find that you will want spaces and commas as separators:

      HSNUM+", "+SFX+", "+APTNO+", "+STREET

And if this gets put on a report, it often looks tidier with the trim function too:
      alltrim(HSNUM)+", "+alltrim(SFX)+", "+alltrim(APTNO)+", "+alltrim(STREET) etc

In both cases above, I am assuming that the fields are character fields.
      Hope this helps

RE: Repeating Data in one field

        Nip:
The default rule only works on data entry
        Create a operation update
the field on the left would be MAILADDRESS
the condition would be the formula to combine all the fields
        such as

        HSNUM+"-"+SFX+"-"+APTNO+"-"+STREET
you can then run this update any time

          Excuse me?

          I thought he said,

"combime the above automatically without retyping each field when entering new data."

RE: Repeating Data in one field

In my earlier post I was assuming the second field was a calulated field, which would then update everytime the data is saved or changed.

An update operation is surely more cumbersome.

            All the best

              Hi Peter

Thanks for the info, HSNUM is a numeric field the rest are character so I think I have apples and oranges I was just trying to save some time in typing each field value in one field called Mail_Address.

              Appreciare your help.

                Sorry Stan;
I thought Nip was compiling a voter list and was getting info from another source and did not want to have to key in info for the mailing lables.

RE: Repeating Data in one field

I've emailed an apology to Charlie in case my "Excuse me?" was taken as something other than a jest. Looking at this again I'm interested in whether we're talking about "database" as a table or "database" as a set of tables.

My take on the subject was based on the assumption that he was entering data in a table and wanted the concatenation to occur in another field in the same table.

If the field value to be constructed from the data entry is in another table, a posting field rule might be appropriate, or the suggested update operation.

                    Hi Stan

It's the same table. Another field in the table is Mail_Address and I wanted to combine HSNUM,SFX, APTNO, and Street as they are all separate field in this voter database.

I appreciate your response and I can report it works and I am happy. I am just learning with this as we are elected to this post in the Town and were introduced to this software which we like and it is doing the job of printing out a voter checklist.
