Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    No Exp. Xbasic - Importing & Exporting Text fi

    I am currently re-writing an isp billing application which i originally did in a product called "layout" which is no longer available nor supported as well as being only 16bit.

    basically i need to be able to import thousands of these records into a "temp.dbf";

    example;

    Sat Feb 26 20:44:07 2000
    User-Name = "martin"
    NAS-IP-Address = 203.37.71.131
    NAS-Port = 7
    NAS-Port-Type = Async
    Acct-Status-Type = Start
    Acct-Delay-Time = 0
    Acct-Session-Id = "311667999"
    Acct-Authentic = RADIUS
    Called-Station-Id = "62802900"
    Framed-Protocol = PPP
    Framed-IP-Address = 203.37.71.236
    Timestamp = 951558247
    Request-Authenticator = Unverified

    Sat Feb 26 20:45:11 2000
    User-Name = "oscarsmith"
    NAS-IP-Address = 203.37.71.131
    NAS-Port = 27
    NAS-Port-Type = Async
    Acct-Status-Type = Stop
    Acct-Delay-Time = 0
    Acct-Session-Id = "311667997"
    Acct-Authentic = RADIUS
    Acct-Session-Time = 1167
    Acct-Input-Octets = 7217
    Acct-Output-Octets = 6589
    Called-Station-Id = "62802900"
    Framed-Protocol = PPP
    Framed-IP-Address = 203.37.71.234
    Timestamp = 951558311
    Request-Authenticator = Unverified

    And I export this text file;

    # Users file as of the ...............12-07-2001
    # Created by ISP-Plus...........version 1.0a
    # as @ 11:52:03
    #
    12313 Password = "testpassword"
    Service-Type = Framed-User,
    Framed-Protocol = PPP,
    Framed-Routing = None,
    Filter-Id = "std.ppp",
    Framed-MTU = 1500,
    Framed-Compression = Van-Jacobson-TCP-IP

    3242314 Password = "testpassword"
    Service-Type = Framed-User,
    Framed-Protocol = PPP,
    Framed-Routing = None,
    Filter-Id = "std.ppp",
    Framed-MTU = 1500,
    Framed-Compression = Van-Jacobson-TCP-IP

    aad Password = "testpassword"
    Service-Type = Framed-User,
    Framed-Protocol = PPP,
    Framed-Routing = None,
    Filter-Id = "std.ppp",
    Framed-MTU = 1500,
    Framed-Compression = Van-Jacobson-TCP-IP

    RE: No Exp. Xbasic - Importing & Exporting Tex

    trevor:

    try using the export and import operations in A5. You establish the fileds to be imported and select new dbf.

    the manual covers the topic. you should not have to write any code.

    I hope this helps.

      RE: No Exp. Xbasic - Importing & Exporting Tex

      Hi,
      Alpha can import the text file using the import feature, however the data needs to be formatted differently. The import feature assumes that each record has all the data in one line, not in several lines like your example. So you have 2 choices, convert the data into the format needed for the import operation or use xbasic and the 'read' command to read each line of data into your data file. If you want I can write a short program to do convert the data file for use by the import function. I would however, suggest using xbasic and the 'read' command.

      Exporting the data in the format you want will also require the use of xbasic and the 'write' command. The export function in Alpha5 puts all the information about a record into one line (like the way it likes to see data for an import). The xbasic 'write' command will allow you to put the data into the format you desire.

      Using the 'read' and 'write' commands in xbasic is not that difficult, it just takes a litte practice. We use both in our applications and they run quite nicely and very quickly.

        RE: No Exp. Xbasic - Importing & Exporting Tex

        Hi Trevor,
        I have attached a zip file called circuit.zip. It is an Alpha 5 database (tables, scripts, etc) to give you an idea on how to import/export data files in the format you described. Simply unzip the file into the directory of your choice and open it up with Alpha 5.

        There is a table called temp. There is a script called import which will import your text file into the temp.dbf. You will need to modify the import script if you have more fields that were included in your example.

        The export routine is not complete in that it exports all fields and does not include field names as in your example. That should be simple for you to change. I didn't have time to complete that.

        Hopefully it will give you a start and some ideas on text import and export when the data for a given record is not included all in one line.

        Good Luck,
        Mike

          Many thanks Mike, on testing this it run so slow (I am not critising you code), why is this ?

          I've used different approachs (Foxpro,Layout)in the past with only 16bit compile
          which speed factor is 50 - 200 times faster.
