Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form Design Problem

I've run into a problem using A5V4.5 build 266. When I open a database and go into form design to edit an existing form, I get a design screen with nothing displayed. I can 'View' the form, but I see nothing in 'Design' mode. Same problem with reports - I can 'View' them, but I see nothing in 'Design' mode. Other than this major problem, everything else seems to be working correctly.

    Any ideas?

    Dave,

When you go to design mode, are you able to see the name of the form in the blue bar at the top? If so does it match the name of the form you want to view in design mode?

    A thought to start with.

      Dave,

I hate to ask this, but are the scroll bars
all the way to the left side (horizontal)
& all the way to the top(vertical) in design
      mode?

        Ken,

Yes, the form name appears at the top of the design screen. I can't figure what the hell the problem is and it's driving me nuts. The problem happens in ALL my applications.

          Doug,

I'm a full time computer science teacher at a community college, so I ask questions like yours to my students on a regular basis. The answer is - the scroll bars are where they should be, but thanks for the thought.

I truely hope there is a bug in V4.5 and it's not my stupidity showing (again).

                Doug,

One of the things I like about working with A5 (and A4 for that matter) is that they keep reinforcing what I don't know. That helps to keep my head on straight.

                  Charlie,

Good idea - I just didn't think about it.

I'm including 'testfile.zip' to this message. I was starting to do some layout work to begin converting an A4 app to A5 when the problem cropped up. I stopped what I was doing and posted the cry for help.

Dave - when you are developing, and repeatedly go in and out of desgin mode for a form, occassionally something gets messed up. I can't remember whether just completely exiting Alpha will fix it or not. You may have to reboot. Try exiting first.

                      Martin,

I've exited, rebooted a number of times and even cussed once or twice. Sometimes the first two fail, but I feel better after the third. The first two didn't work this time homever - and I don't feel much better after cussing.

                            Martin,

The form with the six buttons display in View mode, but not in Design mode. Are you saying that you can see the form with the buttons in Design mode? If that's true, there is something wrong either with my system or installation of A5V4.5.

Dave, yes. I can open your form (main menu) in design mode just fine.

                              Open the control panel.
                              Select the forms tab.
                              Right click on Main Menu.
