Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi,

I am in the midst of a big change, if it doesn't work I'll be happy to put a zip in a phorum message.

      RE: parent records only

      Hi All,

My new approach doesn't work either. All goes well in the form until it is time to enter data into the embedded browse. That's where it draws a blank, nothing goes in so I don't know how well it will save it. The app usually resides in C:|program filesa5v4stone

Believe me I know when to holler H E L P !! The zip is attached.

      Thank you all in advance,

        Ed,

I downloaded you file and opened both the orders and the one for the clients. Some of the tables in both are somewhat greyed out which means when you created the tables, you were not in the same directory as the app.

Because of this, I was unable to evaluate your problem. You will need to recreate the tables, making sure of the path name.

This is easy to miss and has happened to most everyone. You start out with a new database and cease working on it, closing it out. When you open it again and try to save a table, it's actually saving it in the A5 directory, at least that's been my experience. Look in the A5 directory and see if there are any files with names that you gave to your tables. If you find them, copy them to the directory which holds your database.

          Hi Ken,

I can't imagine how this happened. I keep all of the app in C:program filesa5v4stone. But ...... I did find some of the po_items files in a5v4. I moved them over to stone and will rezip and send.

            Hi Ken,
Apparently I didn't get them all. I tested the zip file and it wouldn't open. I think I have it corrected now, try this one.

              Ed,

Still no go. The po_items, clients and shipto tables are still greyed out. I'm unable to open the forms.

                RE: parent records only

                Ed,

I downloaded your latest. Saw the greyed tables Ken mentions. Dropped them from the database, and the added them back. Is working now. As Ken notes this usually means the tables in your database are scattered across multiple folders. Putting parts of the database in different folders kills portability, and is something I try to avoid. You can see the path to each table in your database by changing the 'view' in A5's control panel. Instead of displaying icons, choose details.

Your form is now based on a set, and the set link definitions look ok. Data entry into the browse on your form is blocked because you did not use an embedded browse, instead you chose to insert a named browse which you created elsewhere. That browse is based on the set, not the table being browsed. Regardless, I'm not sure you can use a named browse in this context. I recommend you switch to an embedded browse.

                  Hi Phorum,

I am having a really tough time keeping A5 fromsaving the files in a5v4 instead of stone. I copy them from a5 in to stone (which most of the time won't letme due to file sharing poblems, so I swithch to DOS and copy them over). Then all of a sudden, they are in a5 again. The magic of all of this is beyond comprehension to me. I understand what you have said Tom, but how do I keep this from happening?

                  Perplexed,

                    RE: parent records only

Ed, I recommend you exit alpha five before copying or moving any tables.

If you hit a file sharing error message, the file is in use by another process (or at least windows thinks it is). I recommend you investigate this first, closing any applications which may still be using the files, before stepping outside Windows to DOS. In my opinion you're asking for trouble if you ignore these messages.

                      RE: parent records only

                      Hi Tom,

I thought that would be the problem also, so I exited alpha, and it gave the same message. Then I rebooted, same story. So I rebooted in DOS and moved the files. BTW ........ I believe I have the solution to Alpha storing files in a5v4 instead of the designated folder.

When you click on the big blue "A" on the desktop (that gets installed when a5 is installed), it will bring up a list of databases. Now,if the DB you want is not spelled out, you have a choice of selecting "more databases" and using a mini windows explorer to find and click on the one you want. At that time you are in the a5v4 folder and anything you save will go into that folder, regardless of it's previous location.

Hi Tom (and a jillion others),

You will be happy to know that it works just fine. Making an embedded browse of the child table is what did it. How can I thank each and everyone of you. All fields are filled now by lookup popup lists except PO number, quantity and discount. Whew that cures the printer problem with the older A4 version. Now I need to remember to never use "other databases".

                        I get to sleep tonight,

                          Hi Phorum,

OOPS, I thawt I had it all done, but the last field jumped up and grabbed me. I am trying to summmarize the cost of each item for a given PO, but it wants to give me a total for the entire table of many POs. Is there a way to put an expression on a summary calc field?

I am considering linking a dummy table to the set and summarize that each time, then clearing that table upon exiting.
