Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Editing "Microsoft Access" files

I am currently having to look at an Access.mdb file. It is in a folder named "Data tables" and contains various tables that I would like to:- Add records / edit records / delete records / do batch updates etc. etc. I am able to save each Access table in a table.dbf format and I am then able to manipulate the files with Alpha5/Alpha4, which is far simpler than with the original Access program. Does anyone know if it is then possible to place my manipulated files back into the Access table.mdb format? I don't know how Access works so are there problems that I should be aware of, for example I can't see how Access indexes work and could I corrupt them if I manipulate the files with the Alpha programs? All help appreciated,
    many thanks David

    RE: Editing

    David,

    You basically have 2 choices....

    1) continue to save the tables in the *.mdb as seperate
*.dbf files.....minipulate the data as desired & then
import the tables back into the *.mdb database.

    or

    2) In alpha5,from the control panel, tables tab, drop the
[file] menu & select "attach sql table" then select a data
source (MS Access*.mdb). You will have to "link" to each
table that you want to work with. When you establish the
ODBC link the control panel with show the linked table in
the "tables" tab of the control panel.

    good luck!

Sorry, I left out some stuff on your first option.....

      1) continue to save the tables in the *.mdb as seperate
*.dbf files.....manipulate the data as desired & then
import the tables back into the *.mdb database. To import
the *.dbf files back into Access..... From the Access [FILE]
menu option select "Get External Data" & follow the obvious
prompts to import the data back into Access97. Alpha 5 uses
      the FoxPro 2.6 *.dbf format....

        RE: Editing

Another option would be to leave the .dbf tables external to Access and link the Access mdb to them (link each one)and not have them internal in the mdb....Access works well with some operations linked to external dbf files..
One would probably need to consider the index issue...might be a nuisance...

          RE: Editing

Another variation would be to (in Access)use the Docmd.TransferDatabase command
          ex:
DoCmd.TransferDatabase acImport or acExport, Type of table, folder where table is, acTable, sourcename, destinationname

in Access (pushbutton activated) to import or export at will....the index will be automatically handled upon import into Access and generated when exported...

          Working...
