Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Cannnot create lookup ???

    Phil:
Your script would solve the problem reindexing lookup table.
As the error occurs after entering eight records or more, a fix should trigger the script upon 8 entries. I am doing this manually with a button on the form, and a reminder is provided for the user to push the button when a calc field shows that 8 entries have been made. See my message above.
Maybe you can design an automatic process.

      Antonio:

Yes the script works OK. What I ended up doing was to create a button with on push events 1)Save Record, 2)Run Script and 3)New Record. I made this button the last tab stop in the data entry sequence so it would receive focus automatically and all you have to do is hit the enter key and the current record is saved, the lookup table is reindexed and the curser jumps to the first field to enter a new record. Works really nifty. Thanks for your suggestion.

Sorry it took so long to respond, Roger's server'sbeen down for days. Am working in a dedicated environment, no one else even in A5. This problem existed in the previous version and remains in Ver 4.5 Build 266. I had hoped that V 4.5 would cure the problem. I tried previously to zip but the application will not compress to under 1 MB, even with minimal records. My indecies are not filtered but are compound, although the involved lookup index is one field only. The lookup may run fine for n # of records (totally variable), fail and in some cases, work again. If I mouse click on the lookup field it may lookup correctly on the 1 st or 2nd or 3 rd etc. try or simply not work again. Must exit & re-enter. Same result on 3 different computers (1 a laptop). Running Windows SE on all 64 to 256K. Two of the three computers are not networked. Using PC Anywhere to keep all computers updated.Befuddled.

          Hi John:

If you read all the notes in this stack you will see that neither you nor I are the only ones having this lookup problem. It seems to be a bug within Alpha itself. There are some workaround solutions posted in these messages including one from me. Check it out and let all of us know what you may come up with.

            John:

Check out my notes posted on 6/7 and 6/11. So far, this method has worked quite well as a workaround. Let me know what you think should you try it.

              Phil,

Sorry to give you the good news, but Alpha found the lookup bug and will be posting a build update for v4.5 after some more testing. I tested a copy and filtered lookups work without error.

Thank you for the good news. When should we expect this bug fix to be available and how do we get ahold of it?

                Best regards, Phil

                    RE: Cannnot create lookup ???

                    Phil

I get the same problem on any of 3 machines operating independantly, single user. "TOTALLY RANDOM".
The only workaround I have found is, when the message "Cannot create lookup. Lookup definition incomplete or invalid" do the following:
                    1. Enter
                    2. Enter
                    3. Left arrow
Believe it or not it works.
This tells me we are looking at a bug, as obviously the lookup works.

                      Antonio,

I see that build 267 has not yet been posted in the Alphasoftware download section. This build does fix the problem. Maybe you can email tech support and see if you can get a copy.

Yea, John, it is a bug and Alpha has supposidly fixed it. They just have not released it yet, build 267, I think. See some of the latest messages above. Thanks for your workaround.

Peter - Did you ever solve this problem. I also have it happen, and I agree with you - there are no reasons or similar key strokes that create this problem, and yet, every once in a while, when entering items on a sales order, it "times out" with that message, and then fixes itself.

It is a pain and it makes it look "unprofessional" to my client to not be able to explain why they can't access their inventory occassionally for a sales order. I am in V5 and about to update to V6/V7.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

                            Look Up Reply

First time that I've used this new message board set up so hopefully I'm being correct.

My clients occasionally report this when adding several child records so I do not get to see the error only their reports. Obviously I am very interested in the cure.

They are all using Runtime so cannot get to thir control panel but might I suggest that the next time you get the error and before you go any further:

                            A) Go to the control panel and check the Trace window
                            B) Open the default browse of the child record and see if it appears screwed up or bleeding
                            C) Do the same fore the look up table

My cure though I am not sure that it is 100% is to run a dummy query on the child table then drop the query after or before each new record is added.
