Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    point of sale

    HI Phorum,

Has any one developed a point of sale app in A5v4 that inludes generating bar-code labels as well as reading bar-codes?

    RE: point of sale

    Hi Ed,

I am finishing up an Alpha 5 add-in package to provide the Point-of-Sale, Barcoding, Validation and Scanning routines that most require as internal Alpha 5 routines. I'm intending on marketing them for Alpha 5 Version 5, but if there is enough interest, I could release it for version 4.

These routines (which are extremely easy to use) do 4 major things.

    1. Placing a simple function call on a form takes care of all the scanning issues with barcode scanners. When you scan a barcode, it grabs the barcode and either inserts it into a form object of your choosing, or does a find with the scanned value. You don't have to be in any specific field or mode when you scan.

    2. Sends ASCII data to a LPT or COM port for Point of Sale terminal displays and cash drawers. (It does not have to do a DOS shell to do this.)

    3. Validate checksums of various numbering systems (including Bank Routing #'s, VIN, ACN, ABN, barcodes, etc)

    4. Converts text to the characters in a specific barcode font for a variety of barcodes (all of the popular ones) and optionally, adds the checksum(s) desired. The routines work generically with almost all barcode fonts, but are configured to translate for many of the barcode fonts available from specific companies by just setting a single option. In some cases (such as code 128) it translates to the optimum (shortest) sequences for the A, B and C codes (or can be forced to one or more if desired).

The one thing I don't know is whether to include some barcode fonts as part of the package. I guess it depends on if people have favorite fonts or not. There are differences, particularly when barcodes are small and are about the size of a printer pixel. Larger ones don't generally have any problems.

Is this what you are looking for?

      RE: point of sale

      Hi Ira,

Honestly, I don't know, I have never been associated with bar codes in the past so most of what you said is greek to me. I have been asked to develop or buy an app that will generate various bar code labels, read them as as well, also provide a cash drawer driver, and track inventory. If your app can perform these tasks, I could very well be interested. Can you give me a preliminary estimate of the cost of an app such as this. i can go a step further, given an app that will print bar code labels as well as read them and have a cash drawer driver, I can do all of the inventory, invoices, etc.

        RE: point of sale

        Ed,

What I have is not an application, it is just the Xbasic functions to enable the easy use of barcoding, scanners and point-of-sale terminals in an app of yours or someone else's design.

Surprisingly, to write this code in XBasic or any other language is not for the faint-of-heart. What surprises me is how many errors there are in the checksum routines provided by various companies. They are many that have subtle, yet different results for the exact same checksum types. The implications are there are many with bugs in them (Who do they think they are? Microsoft? {;?)
