Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why won't this Xbasic script work?

    Hi all, can someone tell why this xbasic script is not working? It seems to go through the motions with no errors but no fields are updated.

    I'm obviously missing something but have exhausted all variations that I can come up with.

    tbl1 = table.open("racefields.dbf")
    tbl2 = table.open("percentage.dbf")
    tbl2.index_primary_put("date")

    tbl1.fetch_last()
    while .not. tbl1.fetch_eof()

    rec = tbl2.fetch_find(percentage->date)

    if rec > 0 then

    tbl2.change_begin()

    if tbl1.date=tbl2.date.and.tbl1.time2=tbl2.time then

    if tbl1.overplc=1 then

    tbl2.rated1=tbl1.horse
    tbl2.ratrat1=tbl1.ratings
    tbl2.rat1winpc=tbl1.winpc
    tbl2.dist=tbl1.dist

    end if

    tbl2.change_end(.t.)
    else

    ui_msg_box("Error",racefields->date + " is not in your percentage table")

    end if

    tbl1.fetch_prev()

    end while

    tbl1.close()
    tbl2.close()

    ui_msg_box("Operation Completed","All done.")

    end

    Any help would be very much appreciated,
    Regards
    Greg

    I dont exactly understand what you are trying to do, but if - percentage->date - is a date field then - if rec > 0 - wont work, you cant use a numerical expression on a date field

      It's inadvisable to name fields or indices after built in functions.

      The 'date' field in the percentage table has the same name as the date() function. Is virtually guaranteed to cause trouble when Alpha Five tries to parse the expression.

      Solution is to familiarize yourself with the function names and don't use any of them to identify objects in your system. Date and Time are often used and almost always cause trouble as field names.

        RE: Why won't this Xbasic script work?

        Looks like, in this part---

        tbl2.change_begin()

        if tbl1.date=tbl2.date.and.tbl1.time2=tbl2.time then

        if tbl1.overplc=1 then

        tbl2.rated1=tbl1.horse
        tbl2.ratrat1=tbl1.ratings
        tbl2.rat1winpc=tbl1.winpc
        tbl2.dist=tbl1.dist

        end if

        tbl2.change_end(.t.)

        you may be having trouble with the begin change and change end.

        Seems it would be more logical as:

        if tbl1.date=tbl2.date.and.tbl1.time2=tbl2.time then

        if tbl1.overplc=1 then
        tbl2.change_begin()
        tbl2.rated1=tbl1.horse
        tbl2.ratrat1=tbl1.ratings
        tbl2.rat1winpc=tbl1.winpc
        tbl2.dist=tbl1.dist
        tbl2.change_end(.t.)
        end if
        There can be only one.

          hi,

          There is a file racefields that stores each horse in a particular race as a record. When the race is run each horse is flagged as having finished 1st, 2rd, 3rd or 4th.

          The percentage table store the results. Each record has fields to accomodate the first 4 placegetters in each race along with their win dividend, rating, etc.

          What I'm trying to do is create a record in percentage that has the 4 placegetters (these are flagged manually in the racefields file after each race)along with their dividends, etc.

          I have created a post operation that creates the records in the percentage file based on the date and time of the race and I'm trying to add the 4 placegetters to those records.

          Regards
          Greg

            I think that the line:

            while .not. tbl1.fetch_eof()

            should be:

            while .not. tbl1.fetch_bof()

            you are stepping backwards through the table and starting with the last record so the while statement stops before it starts

              I'm not sure what your intentions are, but it seems to me that you are only changing one record in table 2. If you want to evaluate each record in the table then you would need to use a function to count the records and then use the loop function ending after all of the records are evaluated. Also you may wish to substitute a variable for the "percentage->date" field used in the fetch_find function.
