Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5, version 5 update?

I'm trying to plan my summer! Any further news as to when Version 5 will be available for purchase?

    RE: A5, version 5 update?

From the grape vine the last I heard was 3rd quarter :(

BUT - so long as it's a good one! In truth I expect the main benefit of an Alpha Conference is to give Selwyn and Alpha Software folks a hard date that they MUST have a release done by. :)

Third quarter? These guys are taking after Microsoft! This is more than sad!

        RE: A5, version 5 update?

        Hi Peter,
I was under the impression Microsoft released products that were only partially finished and buggy, just to get the $ and then make us download updates twice a week as they finished the product.

That would make Selwin and crew something of the opposite of Microsoft by releasing a product later that was more complete, which also would not require a weekly patch download.

However, I'd love to see V5 soon too (a lot of my business prospects hangs on some of the new features) so I am willing to send $3 to the crew as in incentive to put in a little OT! =:o)

        Who's with me???

I'd be willing to send $10, maybe even more as if Version 5 is available early in the 3rd quarter, simply because I operate a very seasonal business - summer is downtime and therefore a good time to get my program in shape before I don't have the time.

              Big spender...
              Sounds like you got money.
              You single? Just kidding!

I don't think our offers will be accepted, but I thought it'd be a nice gesture for them.

                Anthony,

Actually, I realize the A5 staff is working extremely hard at getting out a good product. It's just that it is disappointing to see it keep getting pushed back, seemingly further and further. Maybe it's a false rumor and Alpha will surprise us with a release next week? Hope springs eternal...

                  RE: A5, version 5 update?

In defense of Alpha Software, I am sure everyone realizes the complexities of putting out a major software product. The last thing Alpha Software wants to do is to put out a product that has known problems. So I am sure they are working diligently to get things resolved as soon as possible. However, to ask when they will have something fixed and ready is a little like asking your doctor "when will there be a cure for cancer". The programmers first have to determine the cause of a problem before they can fix it and you cannot set a time frame for doing that. I'm also sure there are several problems they must resolve. So we'll just have to sit back and wait patiently.

No doubt you have seen this before, but it still makes me smile.

                    If Microsoft Built Cars.....
                    1. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.

                    2. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

                    3. Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine. For some strange reason, you would accept this too.

                    4. You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought "Car2000" or "CarNT". But, then you would have to buy more seats.

                    5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast, twice as easy to drive - but would only run on 5 percent of the roads.

                    6. The Macintosh car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars, which would make their cars run much slower.

                    7. The oil, gas and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.

                    8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.

                    9. The airbag system would say "are you sure?" before going off.

                    10. If you were involved in a crash, you would have no idea what happened.

Just for the record, Sylvia Tobias and I have been toying with starting a user group out here in CA. Sylvia emailed Richard looking to find ways to connect to Alpha Fivers out here, and also asked about the release date for V5. This was my source for it looks like 3rd Qtr. Sylvia also observed that at the conference most of the work was in adding features rather than debugging... I wonder waht all it will contain...

Reminds me of a story from my Dad's friend that used to own a gas station/repair shop. (updated to today's costs) Seems customers kept complaining about the cost of changing a wire or other simple thing to fix electrical problems so he finally put up a sign:

WE FIX ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS FOR FREE!!
                      ( $75/hr. to find the problem. )
