Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting from 4v4 to 5V4.3

Hi: I am new to Alpha and need to convert from 4v4 to 5v4.3. In the book it says to run the converter card from control panel / apps tab? This does not make sense to me. How do I run the converter application to convert from 4v4 to 5v4.3?

    Thanks
    Jeff O

    Jeff,

I've never done it that way. 'back when' I simply imported the tables into A5. I'm not sure you're going to be able to import the forms, et al. Could be wrong, but I haven't heard of anyone doing that.

I'm curious, in what book did you read this? There's no app tab or converter in my control panel or are you talking about the A4 control panel?

Book: "Alpha Five for Windows Users Guide" page Appendix A Page 1.

Yes, I agree that there is no "apps tab" in the control panel?

I might need some "help" down the road converting the xbasic and other functions over to 5. What will not convert?

So what is the A4 or A5 control panel? (newbie)

      Thanks

        Jeff,

Do a search on this board. Try: convert and A4 and A5 or the like. Three have been a number of posts about this. It's bee a long, long time since I converted but I don't think expressions will make the trip.

No doub't some more recent converts will reply as well but a search will reveal the answers to your questions.

Sorry, Ken's right, nothing converts but the dbf's. The first time A5 reads them they will be converted so you might want to work from a back up copy. Everything else must be redone. I am in the process now (early) but don't expect to really do a lot till A5v5 as I think this will make the process less painful (but still plenty painful)
There are a lot of things to relearn. (and I'm kind of old for the relearning mode) but A5v5 promises to have a lot of capabilities to make the conversion worthwhile.

Thanks for the information. The reason we need to convert is to get to multi user. I assume that 4v4 does not do multi user running under Windows NT? Does any 4v version do multi user?

I am also having a problem running 4v4 under Windows 2000. It comes back with a LAN error and stops.

            Thanks

You might post these last questions in the Alpha Four message forum. They're a bit off topic here, and will get wider exposure among knowledgeable Alpha Four types 'over there'.

RE: Converting from 4v4 to 5V4.3

A4v4 IS capable of multi-user. However, I would still recommend upgrading to A5 for the Windows environment. There are just too many other issues - like how long will the DOS programs be supported.

As for the "conversion" you referred to, it probably only concerns the memo fields. I think there was a conversion 'program' to change the memo structure from A4 to A5v1 when they originally went from .dbt files to .dbf files but I can't remember the details of the top of my head.

To make the conversion from A4 to A5, you must (a) understand what is being done in the current A4 application, (b) understand what features you want to add, change, or delete when making the conversion, and (c) rebuild everything but the data in A5. "Everything" means forms, reports, letters, labels, scripts, expressions, field rules, the works. It sounds like a lot and it is. But, having existing field rules, expressions, and other logic to work from can help a great deal.

                  Hello Jeff,

Don't really have much to add to the good answers you've been given. A4v4 is definately multi-user over a network, I'd for sure go to A4v6 if I were staying with A4. I did a lot of work in A4, loved it, resisted going to A5 for quite a while. While there is a learning curve I can do things now with A5 and xbasic quickly that would have been difficult to do in A4. There are some things in A4 that remember fondly but they are few and far between. I'd never go back to A4 for three reasons:

A5 is more powerful by several factors.
DOS is not gaining market share :-)
Alpha Software will probably not do any more work on A4.
A5v5 is in the wings and is pretty neat.
Intriguing things are being planned for A5v---------

                  Ok, 5 reasons.

                  Jim
