Lost *MUF file

I recently replaced my hard drive and prior to doing so carefully backed all my data. However after restoring my data to the new drive I cannot access this data as the '*MUF file' cannot be found. How do I overcome this problem?

hi lloyd:

the muf file is a counter for network users if i recall correctly. if you have an app titled my_app it will require a "my_app.muf" file. this file is of zero length in an un loaded app. go into good ol' dos in the diractory that your app is in and type the following dos command

edit my_app.muf

when you are in the editor don't type any keys!

then hold down the alt key and type fs then type (hold the alt key down again) fx. this will yield a file "my_app.muf" of zero bytes.

gotta love ol' dos!

Tks Ed for your prompt reply. Unfortunately no success with your suggestion. The file does show zero bytes in the unloaded situation. When I try to acces the database I get the following -
'Could not open or create Multi-User-Information file C:myfilesmemberlistmembers.muf Database for members.muf'

Any more suggestions ?

What did you back up onto, CDR or CDRW?

If so, after copying the files to your new hard drive, did you remember to highlight ALL the files and remove the check mark from the 'read only' box in file properties?

This might explain your problem...

How did you know about the Alt-fs and Alt-Fx stuff....? Can you help me with that? I'm an old DOS guy and the most recent DOS manual that I have is version 5.

Have you found another source, perhaps on the net or somewhere? Man if that came from your memory - that's really something!

Loyd, I think if you rename the attached .muf with your apps name it will work.

hi:

memory is a funny thing. mine is so bad that i was going to hide my own easter eggs this year, but ol' dos stays right there. the Alt fs and Alt fx are one of the dos things that carried into windows. Alt selects the upper tool bar f selects the file menu and s selects save. if you were to select Alt fx (file exit) the dos editor won't save the file as it is of zero length. using Alt fs forces the save and then you exit with Alt fx.

unfortunately i don't think that the original problem was resolved.

Worked fine. Removed the read only attribute as you said and the files are back Many tks. By the way I backed up to CDRW disks. Maybe you can tell me why some of the tables in the Control Panel are dimmed and cannot be loaded. I cant find an explanation.

hi again lloyd:

if the table is dimmed in the control panel you probably had it placed in another directory that is no longer there. i'm not sure if A5 can report the file location, it can't be found in the properties. if you use windows explorer check to see if the tables exist in the app directory.

i gained intimate experience with this by having my a: drive constantly being accessed upon entering A5. went through all the sysedit and regedit files trying to find out why. as there was no disk in drive a: it would grind for about 15 seconds then stop, allowing A5 to start up.
i had (late at night) grabbed an old table from my laptop put it on a floppy and added it to my app to do an import or something. forgetting to remove the table from the app, A5 (in it's usual way) behaved correctly in trying to load the table information into the control panel. this caused much grief and wasted time.

does any one know of a better relational database, you know, one that will do what you want it to instead of what you tell it to do?

Ed is correct. It is extremely easy to scatter tables across directories/folders. I've done it myself. I'd love to see the control panel indicate this, Vegas style, with horns and lights, but as Ed points out, it's just doing as it's told. We are the careless ones!

I've just trained myself to check the directories once in a while, to be sure all is as it is supposed to be.

Hopefully you can re-install the files from a back up CD.

If you can, remember to highlight all the files themselves and remove the checkmark from the read-only box.

I understand that Me can work with sub folders, making the changing of attributes much easier.

If you return them to their original scattered folders, it might be a good idea to spend time relocating them to the folder you thought they were in. For the mostpart, this is easy.

Just a side-track... you didn't have anything "shadowed" on the old hard drive, did you?

I hope you still have the old hard drive, as you can easily(+/-) retrieve any files you are missing. Just temporarily install the drive, as a slave, and copy them to the new system.
