Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    append

    I am trying to append some fields of the current record displayed on a form to another table. Using the append operation, I am using recno()=current(recno()) in the filter of the transaction table, but it always appends all records. And it will do it a number of times even though Unique is selected.
    This is being used in a button on the form. Tried using current_record = alltrim(str(recno(),10,0)) with
    :append.run("append_absent","BETWEEN(RECNO(),"+ current_record+ "," + current_record+")")

    What's up!!

    Thanks

    RE: append

    Duane, Not sure what your looking for but you might approach the issue by loading a vaiable with the record number and then using that variable name to define your append filter.

    tbl = table.current()
    record = tbl.recno()

    The two lines of code above if run before the append would load the current record number into Var->record. If your append operation now used var->record in its expression I think it would do what you need?

      RE: append

      Thanks Jeff

      I will try that.
      What I was trying was a button on a form that that ran a saved append operation. The form displays about 65 fields of the current record. I filled out the genie and used the 'recno()=current(recno())' in the transaction filter. I had figured it would append the selected fields of the record showing on the form.
      That didn't work, it appended the proper fields as advertized but appended all the records of the table.
      So I took out the filter expression and put the other above current & recno code (original post)( code taken from a 'print the currrent record' script) and put it in the action of the append button. It also appended all records, not just the current one.
      ALso both methods didn't seem to care that I had 'Unique' selected.

      The variable idea sounds neat, I'll try it tomorrow.

      Thanks again

        RE: append

        Duane, I don't have my books handy, but isn't uniqueness determined in the destination (master) table? i.e. append each source record to the destination table but only if the destination table does not already have the same record.

        Your message made me think (perhaps mistakenly) that you thought that 'unique' referred only to records which met the append filter criteria in the source table... and I don't think that's right.

        When used with a filter I think 'unique' in the append method will

        append all records that meet the filter criteria, but
        only if they're not already present in the destination table

        Hope this helps

          RE: append

          Morning Tom

          I do believe you are right about the unique. But on this append, I can hit the button 3 times and it will append all the records (275) 3 times. I go look at the master table and it has 3 sets of records.
          Maybe it will do this if the filter isn't right. I will try Jeff's variable method and try again.

          Thanks
          Duane
