Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Adapting Multi-bay Service Schedule

We are hoping to use Jeff Moses' application in our 5 room podiatry/chiropody practice. At present we have some 11,000 patients in A4 V6 on just the reception computer - working well but we are hoping to do some fancy things like have patient appear on the screen before taking the call - using Caller I D, etc. Over to you Jeff.

    RE: Adapting Multi-bay Service Schedule

Robin, Are you upgrading to A5 or staying with A4? If you are staying with A4 I can give you the table and set structure I use and you will need to build it in A4. If you are planning to upgrade to A5 I can send a mini app of the scheduler and you can modify it as needed.

      RE: Adapting Multi-bay Service Schedule

We have taken the plunge and purchased 5 user A5 4.5.(Was NOT happy spending several hours printing and binding manuals that AlphaSoftware could have photocopied and sent with the software for a few $ more) Also NOTHING regarding networking in the manual. A4 had a chapter on this so we assumed A5 would be even easier. Wrong. How we are gong to operate the applications with five terminals and not a word of help is going to be a challange.

The last went off for some reason before we finished. Sorry to gripe but it is not directed at you! Good suggestion posting here rather than private emails. Having spent some time looking at other threads we are getting a feel for A5; good or bad!

Robin, I'll get you a sample scheduler together as soon as I can. I may be gone for most of the weekend. I think you'll need to get runtime or the network version of A5 so you can use network optimizaion. I don't think the stand alone pro version has it.

            Jeff and Robin,

Not that I have used it without the runtime, But I am "sure" (!) you can use network optimization without the runtime. I 5 user full license should let you use on 5 machines at once.

              RE: Adapting Multi-bay Service Schedule

              Robin,

The basic pattern for your network setup is the same as was used in Alpha Four.

You store the database files on a central 'server' that's shared by all workstations.

You install Alpha Five (development or runtime) on each work station. You do not need to install it on the server. In fact, I think that while the server may actually be a pc like any other, you will get better results and have fewer network wide problems if its dedicated to your database... and not used interactively by any office staff.

Check the document called 'Readme403.pdf' for changes that are not in the manuals. It's available from the Tech Support at Alpha Software's web site (download patches and updates) if you don't have it on your CD. In particular, study the chapter on Network Optimization. While you can load Alpha Five locally and open the database on the server (like you are currently doing in Alpha Four) the performance you will get is not acceptable. Network optimizing copies the visual components of your database, and shadow copies of your tables, to the local work station. Once optimized you load Alpha Five locally, and open the shadow copy of the database. Alpha Five then uses the local copies of the visual components of your application (thereby drastically minimizing the load on your network) together with your real data on the server. The result is performance that you are accustomed to.
