Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Any ideas appreciated. Tried OLE without much success other than PDF

    Thanks

    Daniel,

What problems did you run into using multi page tiff G4 format?
What software did you use for the OLE server to Alpha5's OLE object?

Are you saying that you had success using Acrobat reader as the OLE server,
to put PDF's into the OLE object?

RE: Document Management - Alpha Newbie

      Thanks for responding.
Have A5V4.5+ latest build on 30 day trial.

Fairly new to relational databases :(

      Created OLe field.
In form format via edit /insert ole genie selected acrobat/ windows explorer opened up, selected previously created pdf file double clicked and the pdf symbol eneterd OLE field box. This insert opened up in acrobat reader when double clicked etc.
      Fine

Removed OLE pdf insert and repeated for word 6 in genie. This time word 6 program opened up, not windows explorer, hence I could not select a previously created document to save into OLE field.

Repeated process choosing image option in genie, this time Wang image manager opened up (win 95 last edition). could not get windows explorer to find previously created MPT.

If I am following the instructions correctly, the process of adding document to database appears to be very long winded. I am trying to add thousands of documents to a database, but need the a5v4.5+ for other database functions such as employee records, rostering etc. Would like to be able to attach correspondence files ( as images) or as .doc files.

I also want to use A5V5 for a laboratory records management database where being able to store instrument printouts and correspondence as images would be invaluable.

Off the shelf DMS are too limited in what they do, I need more database power, and application flexibility but do not want to get bogged down in programming if I can help it.

      Your help appreciated .

      "DESPERATE" Dan ;)

Alpha Five vers 4.5 supports bitmap images. Though I don't have experience using them personally, it's my understanding you can create a form and store either an embedded image in the table, or a link to the actual image stored elsewhere.

I believe vers 5, currently under development, will support additional image types.

Daniel, here is a little sample of how I manage all my ole links. I store the file locations right in my database and I use a function I call bitmap to view any file that has a program association in windows. Works great. If I should need to print a report or what not the location of each file is right there in the database.

Hope you follow the little coding:

Here's a little tip for the others: Use the ';' to separate file types in smart fields. Windows will then show all the files with the queried extensions: IE

          Picture0.field.file_type = "All Images (*.bmp;*.jpeg;*.gif;*.png)"
          document0.field.file_type = "File (*.doc;*.txt;*.xls)"

            Jack,
Thanks for the excellent example of the use of smart fields. My personal preference for document management has always been to link to to an external document. I didn't make use of smart field before, but I will now.

              Hi Jack:

I am trying to use Alpha Five v9 to build a document management system too. Did you complete your project?

We have smart clients because we work hard for them.
