Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Missing Menus

We have A5 ver 4.5 build 263 on both our main computer and a lap top. We created an application with a main menu which opens when we start the application, and 4 related menus.

We copied the folder containing the application to a zip drive for backup. When we transfer the zip drive to the lap top and open the application the main menu table appears gray. Also the four related menu forms are mising.
Yet, when the application is started from the zip drive copy with the main computer all works fine.

    Can anyone explain?

    Gene:

    It sounds like either:

    1) Your not copying all of the files in the application directory.

    .or.

    2) The application files are in two or more directories on the main computer, and you have only copied the files in one directory.

This might explain why the application is missing forms.

The reason it is running off the zip drive is that it is able to access the 'missing' files from the main computers hard drive.

Under the table/sets tab, check to see what directories are in play there.

The color of the form may be changing because, under form properties, you have the color(s) set at winback, which uses the local computers color settings/ color scheme. Try locking in the color to the color you want.

I bet the notebook is using a different color scheme than the main computer!

      Gene,
to supplement what Craig said, you can see the path to each table in the database by opening the A5 control panel, then select the tables/sets tab, then right click in the white space inside the control panel, select 'view' from the drop down list, then select 'details' from the next drop down list which appears.

        RE: Missing Menus

Tom/Craig -- You both were right on. I had the Main Menu table I created in the Alpha Sports folder along with 3 other files. The full name and extensions are; Main Menu.dbf, Ddd, Ddm, and .Ddx.

When I move these into the folder, I called "G", where the application is located the main menu does not appear on start up as was design. Also the Main Menu table appears "gray" and the other menu forms will not open. If I move all four back again all works OK.

Will I need to redesign all of these just to get everything into one folder?

There is one more file called menutool which is a Dat file. My application will work with or without this file. Could this be part of the A_sports application?

        Any suggestions are appreciated.

          ***First back up your files.***

There may be a simpler way but the following will work:
          -duplicate the tables FROM THE CONTROLPANEL and be sure to place the duplicates in the folder they should be in, the one holding all other application tables;
          -from the control panel delete (or at least drop from the database) the originals;
          -rename the duplicates as necessary.

An alternate route would be to:
-from the control panel drop (but not delete) the originals.
-Move all the table files to the desired location using Windows Explorer.
-From the controlpanel add the tables back into the database.

William has already covered the bulk of your answer, so hopefully your OK.

The file MenuTool.dat is, on my computer, part of the A5doc folder. I suspect it has no bearing on your application.

William/Craig -- Things are working ok thanks to you !!
I used the first method outlined by you and the application
now works on the laptop. After 2 trys I got it right.

There is one report that should have 4 pages but only one shows up. I may backup to the zip drive again, delete the app from the lap top and recopy again to see if helps. I'm
sure I can get it all working ok.

Thank you both. Alpha ahould reward guys like you.

Regarding my app. it seems the report is all there except there is a blank page between the other pages. It may be that the fonts on the original are different than those in the lap top version. I notice that

                        Gene:

I'm with Craig in that I, too, would pay to participate in this board. It is a phenomenal resource.

As for your report, the likely cause of your blank pages is your layout is bigger than your paper size. Sometimes an invisible blank or small object on the edge of a layout causes trouble. Remember that your printer cannot print right to the edge of the paper so room must be left for the non-printing area.

                        I had the following experience:

I developed a report at home using my HP6L as the printer. In the office my colleague got blanks like yours with his inkjet. I printed fine to the network Laser (Xerox monster printer). The explanation was that the non-printable area of an inkjet is slightly larger than for a laser. The solution was to increase the margins in report properties (from 0.25" to 0.45", I think).

A smarter thing would be for me to install the inkjet's driver on my machine. I don't need the printer; the error would show up during print preview.

This should help you figure out what is happening.

Did you recently install A5V4 on either the notebook or the main computer?

There was a bug in early shipments of A5V4 that would replace the 'Ariel' font with
                          'Ariel italics'.

Just a thought... If you are noticing that a lot of things are italicized, let us know and we'll explain the simple fix!

I am still in the process of getting all things working OK on the lap top. I noticed a font I used in my application was not shown until I added the HP6P printer. Now the font shows up as a choice. I believe it be the extra space needed or a font issue. Have not had time to look into this. Thanks again for the help.
