Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Internet Access

I must admit that I am brand new to Alpha 5 though I have been a devoted Aplah User for years.
I know at the conference there was info on the next relelease of Alpha 5 that would allow you to convert an Alpha5 data base to HTML (as I remember), but can anyone tell me briefly or tell me where to look in the documentation about Internet capabilities with Alpha5 Version 4.3 (I just ordered the latest upgrade so I stay current)
Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Nancy,

The latest upgrade is v4.5. I don't think the internet capabilities you speak about will be availible until the release of v5. At least, I haven't seen anything about it in the v4.5 upgrade.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: Internet Access

      Nancy,

Ken is right, there is not an integrated html driver for version 4.5, but there
are ways to force Alpha5 to output HTML. If you need to generate HTML for a
report,it can be done with just a few html tags inserted into your report. Then
use the generic text only print driver (comes on the Windows CD I think) to print
the report with an html extension.

There are a couple of things that you need to do to get the desired results from
the "generic text only" driver. First make sure that the field height in all of
the fields for the report are set to .167" high, & make sure they are wide enough
so that all of the charactors will be printed to file. Also I understand that
certain fonts seem to work better than others with this driver, I have had pretty
      good luck with Arial.

The graphic below is a report for a Material Request Form. It generates a single
html page for a group of records that make up a single order. When I need to create multiple pages, I genrally use xbasic to fetch the data & write each page.

I have heard of others using their fax modem driver to create a graphic & sending
it as an attachment, & still others use a program called GSview to create a PDF.
Are you wanting to get your data on the internet as web site content, or do you
want to be able to attach your output to an email?

        Doug,
Thanks for your help-it has saved me valuable time trying to figure out where to look for stuff in the manual.
After reading your response, I realize I may have started on the wrong track. What I really want to do is provide users with Inquiry Access to an Alpha database. I guess that still involves HTML but I'm not sure.
        Any ideas or thoughts?

          Ken,
Thanks for your input. I think I may have explained what I want to do incorrectly. What I really want to do is allow users to have Inquiry Access to an Alpha database via the Internet-that may still involve HTML but I'm not sure.

If I understand what you want to do, you can't get there from here.

There are work arounds to get output that would normally go to the printer into HTML format for use on the web, but without using another product in conjunction with Alpha, you cannot have interactive use of your data through the web.

There were some postings a month or more ago about individuals who were using a piece of software to do that. don't recall the software. You should do a search of this forum and see what you can come up with.

                Nancy,

What I really want to do is provide users with Inquiry Access to an Alpha database.

If you are just wanting to let them search through your data without entering or changing records, you may be able to handle that with Alpha5. Before Alpha's new message board came online I kept a database of many of the message post as a refference tool. I wrote xbasic scripts to publish the data to a web site, maintaining much of the original database structure. I never incorporated a cgi script to give the site full search capabilities. Even without the full search the
site is reasonable functional. The link to the site is below, take a look & see if this is similar to what you are wanting to do...
