Default Parent record switches when entering in grandchild

I am experiencing an interesting problem that appears to be worse in version 4.5 than in earlier releases of version 4.

I have a set which utilizes the same tables twice. I'll attempt a diagram:

    Parent
    -Child
    -grandchild
    =great-grandchild
    -great-great-grandchild

-Child (different table as "child" above)
-grandchild1 (same table as "grandchild" above)
    =great-grandchild1
    -great-great-grandchild1

    ("-" represents a one-one relationship, "=" represents a one-many relationship)

If the user attempts to access either of the child data tables to change/modify a record, the parent table changes to another record upon data entry in the child, even though the fields being displayed on the form do not necessarily change.

If the great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild data tables are removed from the set, the problem disappears. If one of the sets of links under a child table are removed (duplicate table references), the problem still exists.

In summary, the parent record becomes a moving target and the child data being changed is not linked to the intended parent record. result: very frustrated user.

I have already eliminated index, lookup and posting activities as being connected to this issue. I am using Alpha Five, version 4.5, build 263.

    Any ideas? Many thanks,

    Rick Hollowell

    Rick:

Your set is extremely complex and, personally, I can only see using a set like that to display data, not for data entry. Peter Wayne has a great article at www.learnalpha.com about simplifying set design. It might be worth your while to take a look at it.

I don't know if this applies to you or not, since you don't say how the form permits entry in the child table. In general, though, I would only permit entry in a child for a one-to-one link through a sub-form, never by placing the fields directly in the form.

    This sounds familiar to me.

I have a set that to me doesn't seem complicated at all. The parent table links to 4 child tables - all of them one-to-one except one of them.

I also use the set for data entry.

I find that the parent record stays put if I place a Quick filter on it.

Also, often times when I first open the form, the child link that is one-to-many is arbitrarily filtered on one record. I merely click the X to turn the filter off, search for a name in the parent record, find it and place a quick filter on it, and can then view all the child records that correlate to that parent.

    Hope this helps.

I concur with Finian. After heading the wrong way for years, I finally took Peter Wayne's advice. The parts of my applications that I have changed as per his suggestions are now rock solid - live and learn.

    Peter,
What is the name of that article. I looked, but there were so many to go through that I either overlooked it, or didn't get to it. Doyou remember the name?
    Thanks,

P.W. also gave out an expanded version of that article at the Alpha Conference last year. Same concept, more details. Very helpful.

Live and learn - learn and live longer!

I'm also finding the following Peter Wayne article helpful for this issue:
"Simplified Alpha Five version 4 set and application design"

Making the application simpler, may allow me to avoid the problem.

    Many thanks,

Okay - I'm in the dark again...no, I'm not a blond, but it is Friday...my problem? I CAN'T FIND THE ARTICLE, "SIMPLIFIED ALPHA 5 VERSION 4 SET AND APPLICATION DESIGN" in LearnAlpha, or anywhere else.

What am I missing besides my brain?

Thank you, Dear. I saw that one but overlooked it, thinking it wasn't the one for set and app design.
