Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table Sum Functions

    Does anyone know how to create a total,dbsum, tablesum (or whatever) expression for the following set:

    INVOICE ++
    ====>FEEAPP (One to many link)

    Invoice contains invoice numbers (they're really characters, but that may not matter), e.g., 100-100, 101-102, 102-103.
    FeeApp contains invoices that have a billed logical field = billed=.t., or billed=.f.

    The database would look like this:
    INVOICE FILE FEEAPP FILE
    INVOICE CHARGES BILLED
    101-100 $100.00 T
    101-100 $200.00 F
    102-103 $350.00 F

    101-100 Total Charges: $300.00
    101-100 Billed Charges: $100.00
    101-100 Unbilled Charge: $200.00 (subtraction)

    All I want to do is determine all charges (I already know how to do that as I can sum all charges, viz. total(feeapp->fee,grp->invoice))
    sum all billed charges (I don't know how to do that), and determine all unbilled charges (which would follow from a calculation of the difference between the two).

    102-103 Total Charges: $350.00
    102-103 Billed Charges: $0.00
    102-103 Unbilled Charge: $350.00 (subtraction)

    And, I know how to do the subtraction. I just can't figure out how to filter to get only the billed charge figure. Please help.

    RE: Table Sum Functions

    Robert,
    Try this:

    new calculated field
    CH = IF(feeapp->billed,feeapp->fee,0) billed charge

    Then just do a total on it:
    total(calc->CH,grp->invoice)) billed charges for invoice

      RE: Table Sum Functions

      It works (you knew it would :?)).

      What I don't get is why can't I do the calculations directly witout the intermediate variable?

      Nevertheless, I thank you for your assistance.

      Robert.

        RE: Table Sum Functions

        I have left other threads on this subject, and I can't figure out the following: why won't this very simple process work in a letter? I really need for the letter/invoice to mirror this process, and it makes no sense that I can get the totals on a form, but can't get totals on a letter (I do NOT want to use a report).

          RE: Table Sum Functions

          Robert, I suppose it's possible you are bumping up against a limitation of the Alpha Five. Perhaps you should submit this to Alpha Software as a wish list item for a future enhancement to the product.

          In my own work I've found that letters have more in common with labels, than with reports. Letters are like 'big' page sized labels. There are limitations in the label layout editor, too. Limitations which are not present in the report engine.
          If using the report engine is not acceptable, you might consider creating an intermediate temporary table, with the calculated values you wish to include in your letters. Then you could export the data from the intermediate table, and merge it into letters you design in your favorite word processor.

            RE: Table Sum Functions

            Thanks. I had came to the same conclusion over the weekend. I still can't understand (but I'm forced to accept) that a formula that works on a form, which is not a report, fails to work (it can't even be entered in the editor) but won't work in a letter. I really didn't want to go through the trouble of so many steps, when the form works just fine, but I've got to finish this project.
