Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    4.5 Report Printing Bug?

This "bug" was apparently introduced with the 4.5 upgrade, and it concerns report printing.

I'm printing to a form that is 6" x 8.5". The top 3.6" of the page is the page header area. The report is based on a many-to-one set, and it page breaks on a change in the key of the parent DB. Each DB record will fit onto a single page of the report form and reflects data for one of my clients. These are invoices. Hard coded into the report is the printer selection, an Epson 24 pin impact printer.

Page 1 prints correctly. The client header is in the correct place, the client's detail data is in the correct place, and the page break occurs at the correct place. So far so good.

Page 2 header prints correctly, and the client 2 page 2 detail prints correctly, However, there is NO page break at the end of page 2 detail. Instead, the detail for page 3 (client 3) prints immediately after the detail of client 2. At the physical end of the page, there IS a page break and the page header data for client 3 is printed followed by the continuation of the detail data for client 3, and that is immediately followed by whatever data for client 4 fits on that page. At the end of that page is another page break, and the same behavior is repeated.

That behavior continues for the remainder of the report.

No changes were made to the report before or after installation of the 4.5 upgrade. Any suggestions on troubleshooting this (if it's not an A5 bug)?

      Ken,

Recently, there was a patch .dll posted here. It fixed a report grouping bug keeping together on page. If you search on .dll You should find it attached to that message.

If not, email me I can email it back. Tried attaching it here but the board won't accept a file at the moment.

        Ken

I am having similar problems with the program

When using the Genie it creates a report that is too wide for a single page, even though the data will fit on one page, and the Genie adds a blank page between printed pages... (the printed pages are numbered correctly I just have additional blank pages.)

Have you gotten any assitance to these bugs after you posted your message?

Hunter, you may have to manually resize objects in your layout to prevent them from extending into 'unprintable' areas at the top and side margins of y our page.

I used to use minimum top, bottom, and side widths of 0.5", but have discovered that some newer printers need 0.6"

If Alpha Five cannot print a portion of your report because it falls in the unprintable region on a page, it will attempt to print it on the next page.

I'm waiting for the DLL that has a fix for the reporting bug. Now that you mention it, an extra blank page WAS generated in my output. Other than that, I'll double check to make sure all report objects fit within the page margins, and the page margins are appropriate for my printer.

I've installed the DLL. While it does have an effect on the printed output (I'm getting an extra blank page every once in awhile when the very last printable line of an invoice is used), the original problem I described at the top of this thread remains. Any suggestions on getting Alpha techies involved?
