Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open ADB

Is it possible to open, via a button, an ADB file. I do not need to open a table/set but the actual Database file.

If this helps, the tables/sets that are part of the ADB file are shared with the original application.

    RE: Open ADB

    John,

I guess I don't know exactly what you mean by "open" the .adb file. Do you want to open the database so you see the control panel, or do you actually want to look inside the .adb file itself?

    And for what purpose?

If it is the former that you wish, you can do something with sys_send_keys and if the latter you can (I think) rename the .adb with the .dbf extension and open it as a table.

    But why, why, why?

      RE: Open ADB

This has been discussed online. Search for changing databases.

Try searching for "Open Database" instead. (Include the quotes).

          RE: Open ADB

I want to be able to open the ADB file from another database because of a couple reason.

I will be distributing my application, my customers may want to generate custom reports, etc. But, when I send an upgrade to my application, I don't want to destroy anything they created in the meantime.

So I created another database based upon the same tables. They can genrate reports, exports, etc in the new database but the upgrade won't contain the ADB file and their changes will be safe.

            RE: Open ADB

            Hi John,

Unfortunately, if the same exact tables are in the 2nd adb, the reports, forms etc are all stored in the table and set's data dictionaries. Only if you copy the data to a second directory will this work. The ADB only contains the global scripts, UDF's, Menus and Toolbars.

If you still want to do this, look at the code I wrote (look at the latest version, not the earliest) for Network Optimization that does an effective switch of the ADB

Also, I intend on offering (not free though) a utility for developer's in the very near future that will allow you to update the individual data dictionaries from any collection of tables, sets and databases and being able to update them in a user's copy without having to resend the whole Applications. It will also be able to delete specific items in the data dictionaries as well.

It will be able to compare an original and new versions and automatically generate the differences between the two so that all the old stuff will be deleted and the new stuff will be added/changed. Anything additional that the user has added to the data dictionary will not be touched as long as the names of the items are different from names your application uses. A simple function call (from a button) will invoke the update.
