Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reading barcodes...

I got my application to calculate and print the barcodes I made based on Inventory Number. Home do I Get the application to recognize the scanned Barcode? DO I have to use a timer with a script? I have been trying this w/o success. Any help would be appreciated...

    RE: Reading barcodes...

To get your application to allow connecting to a barcode scanner, you will need to have a barcode scanner of the "Keyboard Wedge Type". It connects between your Keyboard and your PC. When you scan, it acts as though you used the keyboard to enter the characters (or numbers) of the barcode. They run about the same cost as a standard RS-232 type scanner. If you need help picking one out, you can e-mail me or give me a call 360-715-8868.

You will need to configure the scanner to ONLY read barcodes of the same barcode "Symbology" as your barcode labels. A "Symbology" is like the language of the barcode. The symbology will be something like UPC, EAN, Code 128, Code 39, I 2 of 5, etc.

If you have set up A5 to generate UPC barcodes, be aware that UPC barcodes will be obsolete in 2004 or 2005, the EAN barcode (13-digit) will replace it. The same barcode font is used so the conversion should be easy for you.

      RE: Reading barcodes...

I should mention that the "Keyboard Wedge" type barcode scanner is not a refernece to what the scanning part of the barcode scanner looks like.

You can use Wand (looks like a pencil). It cheap, but is slower to use in a volume setting and if dropped will tend to hit the tip and possibly break it. Then you'll need a new scanner.

There is also Laser. It can read the barcode from a distance but is the most expensive type. It also contains moving parts (a rotating mirror) that do not stand up to abuse well.

A CCD type (long range CCD's are available fairly inexpensively)have the highest first read rate of any scanner and contain no moving parts. They are very durable and I highly recommend this type for nearly every application. If your barcodes are more the 3 inches or so wide, you may need to use the Laser type or check the CCD's specs for the widest Barcode that can be read.

        RE: Reading barcodes...

Thanks... I already have the CCD type...

I should have mentioned that what I am really trying to accomplish is reading the barcode from the label with the CCD scanner. I guess my question actually is HOW do I set my application up to read the barcode label AND then search to see if the inventory number exists? If it does exist pull up the record, if not create the new record.

Do I have to set my application up to be in Query mode with the acceptance field being the Inv_no field or is there another way?

        Thanks again

          RE: Reading barcodes...

Steven, I have not had any experience with A5 and bar codes but I did use a keyboard wedge scanner back in the A4 days. Since the program doesn't know if the input came from the scanner or the keyboard, I would use a "Query by form" and set the cursor on the inventory number, then do the scan. It's just a suggestion, since I have not tried it.

            Hi

Howard is correct. Go to your form, use query by form and scan the part number, then run the query.

Have you set start and stop signals (*) in your barcodes that you printed out? You will need to do this for your scanner to read your barcodes.
