Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help -- error messages

I am running A5 v.4.03, build 230. I was working in my database and received an error message that I "performed an illegal operation." When I click on "details" it refers to A2Engine.dll. I close that and another window pops up -- details indicate Kernel32.dll.

    How can I correct this?

    I appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Carol:
Just shut your machine dow and re-start windows.
Alpha 5v4 is trying to use a memory area that another application is using or was using and did not release the memory area.
It will be trail and error to see which applications are causing the error.

      RE: Help -- error messages

I've did shut down and start over but the same thing is still happening.

Any other suggestions? I was printing on an HP OfficeJet Pro when this all happened. I normally use my HP4+.

      Thanks.

        RE: Help -- error messages

If the app works normally with the HP4+, it's possible that alpha Five is conflicting with the OfficeJet Pro driver. You might try:

        1) verifying that Alpha Five's print setup is pointing to the right printer...

        2) verifying that the report is not 'hard coded' to the HP4+ printer...

        3) as last resort, create another Windows printer object for the OfficeJet printer, but select an older driver, such as HP4+... Then direct Alpha Five output to this printer...

          RE: Help -- error messages

Tom -- I wasn't printing anything in Alpha 5 -- I was printing a fairly large job from Corel Word Perfect while I was working in Alpha 5.

I have another database that works fine. It's just the one that I was working on when I got the error message that I can't get to work again. I can't get into my invoices. I sure hope I didn't lose everything.

Do you think reinstalling Alpha 5 would help?

I thought maybe if I tried updating the indexes would help, but when I try that, I get the error message again. I can open the database, but when I do anything that points to the invoices, it crashes.

            RE: Help -- error messages

            Carol,

If the printer driver is the problem, and was in use, it is irrelevant which program was using it. But given what you said, it is remotely possible that A5 is conflicting with Word Perfect. However, this is unlikely given that many of us use Word Perfect with A5 and many conflicts between HP drivers and other software have been noted, here and elsewhere.

              RE: Help -- error messages

Carol, I think Bill is right. If A5 and the HP printer driver for your officejet are conflicting, I think that conflict will occur whenever they both try to use the same memory region. Seems logical that HP would use the same memory region whether it was printing in Corel or in A5... so if this is what's causing your trouble it should occur regardless of which app is actually printing...

In my own work I advise my clients to avoid using other 'big' applications while working with Alpha Five, especially on systems that don't have lots and lots of memory. Multi-tasking large programs has caused them problems in the past. They have much better results working with Alpha Five and no other 'big' applications.

                RE: Help -- error messages

Carol, I see that you describe the Corel print job as 'fairly large'. This is another indicator that perhaps your system may not have the resources to attempt this while using Alpha Five. You could experiment with different sized print jobs to determine limits, I suppose. If smaller jobs print without difficulty (in Corel) while running Alpha Five, that would indicate that the problem is *not* the OfficeJet driver. If larger jobs cause the problem, it begins to feel like a system resouces issue.

Is there anyway to get my database working? The last time I backed up was Dec. 18th. Believe me, I will back-up more often after this.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Tom -- actually, I was printing 1 page -- but 25 copies of the same page.

                      Carol,

What happens if you close down all applications, reboot, open A5 and *nothing* else. Does it open. If not, what happens if you change the default printer on the system. By the way, did you mention if you are working over a network? I think not, but if so there are other things to check.

While I think of it, are you able to open another A5 application?

Finally, suppose you were to copy all the application's files to another machine. Can you run it there?

It's not time to give up yet.

By the way, *cold* boot, not just a restart.

I just reread the whole thread and you do not say what you were doing in A5 when the error occurred. Can you open the application at all? Can you open A5 with out opening the application? Details.

It may be time to post a complete copy for us to look at. Feel free to email it to me if privacy is an issue. Either way include a list of the specific parts that are broken, with instructions on how to replicate the error(s) you are seeing.

                            Bill --

I did shut down computer completely, turned off everything running in the background, etc. I am not working over a network. I tried changing the default printer.

I am able to open other databases and other applications in that database. It's my "invoices" application in my customers database that is giving me the error. I was entering invoices when the program went whacky.

I will try to copy the files to my laptop and try running it on there.

                            >

I can open the database -- just can't do anything in the invoice application -- and I can open A5.

                              Carol,

I'm a little confused by terminology:

"I am able to open other databases and other applications in that database."

Is "invoices" a table or a set?

Also, are all your tables in the same folder. Have you done any file manipulation on the tables using Windows explorer? (This last is a long shot.)
