Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is it possible to limit the records....

    output in the detail section of a report? I wish to print only the first 2 records that qualify under the filtering rules rather than all of the records that qualify.

    Can anyone please point me in the right direction if this is possible?

    Thanks in advance,

    Greg

    RE: Is it possible to limit the records....

    Greg, if there are no distinguishing values in the records themselves, so that the first two 'look like' all the others which meet the filter criteria, you might consider marking the two you wish to print, and then filter your report to only print 'marked' records.

    The sequence which prints the report would run something like this:

    1) open the table
    2) unmark all records
    3) find and mark the two records you want to print
    4) print the report, after adjusting its filter properties to limit output to marked records

      Greg,
      I believe what you are asking for (Top N Sorting) will be in a5v5. I've never tried this, but you might be able to use a conditional object for your detail section, one condition showing data and another condition showing nothing. If you were able to base the condition on a value in some kind of running total or count (calculated field), it might work. Once again, this is just an idea and I have never tried it.

        Hey John,

        Is "Top N Sorting" something that will return the first N matching records?

        If N were 5, it'd only display the first 5 matches?

        Oh...that'd be cool.

        Thanks,
        Mike

          If there are no grouping levels you should be able to accomplish this with "mrecno()", i.e. mrecno()
          There can be only one.

            Greg,

            There are 2 ways to accomplish this in A5 currently.

            The 1st way is to blank out all fields in the detail area once your running count of records exceeds 2. Then set all those fields in the detail area to allow shrinking

            The 2nd way is to create a template table with the desired report. Copy all the records of desired interest. You can do this using XBASIC record using code similar to

            tbl=table.current()
            tbl1=table.open(templatedbf)
            tbl1.zap(.t.)

            'Clone the records from the current table
            cnt=1

            copynext:

            'Put new table into enter mode
            tbl1.enter_begin()
            tbl1.record_clone(tbl)
            tbl1.enter_end(.t.)

            tbl.Fetch_Next()
            IF .not. tbl.fetch_EOF().and.(2>=cnt) ' 2 is your count of records for the detail section
            cnt=cnt+1
            goto copynext
            END IF

            The other way is to mark the records and copy them to your template dbf. This would be probably more efficient than the above if the number of records to copy was large. (500 or more I suspect)
