Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printing the user's manual

    HI,
First time here--SO DON'T LAUGH!! I just recently purchased Alpha Five Ver. 4.03 and tried to print the manaul so I can read it at my leisure. Well, it doesn't all print!! Just bits and pieces of grids and grayed areas on some pages, nothing on others! Any suggestions? I have an HP LaserJet 5L that works perfectly on everything else. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Roberta
PS I even tried cutting, copying and pasting into WordPerfect, but that doesn't work at all.

    RE: Printing the user's manual

The documentation is on your CD as .pdf & .doc files. Alpha Software has arrangements with a Printer that will print & send you a spiral bound copy of whichever manuals you need. I don't remember the address, but you could search the Message Board and find it, or maybe someone will reply to your message with the address.

It is well worth the cost because printing it yourself is very time consuming & with the cost of printer cartridges, it can be expensive.

I found the URL for you. This is in a message from Mr. Selwyn Rabins:I would like to point out that there a third party company that sells printed versions of the on disk a5 manuals.

these are spiral bound and are probably cheaper, and certainly less hassle, than printing them out yourself.

the url of the company, PrintZone is:

Barry, I tried to order another set of manuals from this third party vendor in November and could not. I'm not sure they still offer this service.

Roberta, are you having trouble printing the PDF or Word version? You might try both. -- tom

          RE: Printing the user's manual

          Roberta,

I printed both the user's and X-Basic manuals without too much problems. However the MS_word version printed better. The psf version did not print the pictures correctly.

I printed in sections and on one side page only.

I found out also that different printers give different qualities of printed document.

The only problem is that the index does not match the page numbers. May be I should have re_setup my printer but I do not want to do it again.

          Good luck

          JP

              Roberta,

If you are having trouble printing on an HP, try setting in the properties of the printer the "Print Fonts as graphics" item. This often solves problems like these.

Also you may want to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat (version 4.05 I believe) which you can get at http://www.adobe.com/

                  RE: Printing the user's manual

                  Hi All,

The Word version is supposed to print better than the PDF and I did so successfully before ordering the commercial version (which is no longer available).

The table of contents in the MS Word version can be regenerated so the page numbers match the pagination produced by your printer. I don't remember the details but the menu structure is something like .../table of contents/regenerate. It's in there somewhere.

                    Hi,
Thanks to everyone for your help!! I printed it graphically and it worked. I've never had that problem before, so I thought it was Alpha. I now know where to go for any answers!
