Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Incorrect Data Type" error

I have set up a query to select a Soc.Sec. number and a specific date from my payroll file. The user is requested to enter both of these and they are put into variables var->socsec and var->wkend (Ending date for the pay period). I used the query genie to generate these queries and saved them to use when a specific button is pushed. I have two separate queries for these items and when run by themselves, and not part of the button script, everything is OK and the proper record is selected. When I try to attach them to the button, I get an "Incorrect Data Type" error BUT...If I click on IGNORE the script works as planned and the proper record is again selected! With the two separate queries, I get two error windows, one after the other. What am I doing wrong and how do I get rid of those darn error windows??

    RE:

Howard, Sounds like your variables are not of the same type as the fields they are supposed to filter. To test it try declaring your variables as global and proper type when the form opens, then drag the variables right onto the form. Remove any other scripting you may have to set the value of the variables. Open the form and type your search values directly into the two variable fields you have just placed on the form. This will assure that the variable types will absolutly match the field types. Now run you button script. If it works all you have to do modify the user dat entry method to what ever you want. If it does not work at least you will know that your problem does not lie in miss matched variable and field types.

      RE:

Jeff, thanks for your response. The value of the two variables is set when the user enters the data in the dialog box. They have been declared global and the var->Wkend is type "date" and the var->SocSec is type "Character". The fields that they reference for the query are the same type as the variables. I will "experiment" with your ideas and let you know how it works out.

Have you tried the debugger to see where the error occurs? Might help.

Thanks for the reply, but....at my level of knowledge the debugger is still a mystery. The problem turned out to be something simple....I had a filter attached to the "letter" as well as trying to use a query to accomplish the same thing. Guess I better start looking over my own documentation a bit closer...

Tom, thanks for the offer, but I would have to "sanitize" the files due to social security numbers and employee information contained therein. The problem turned out to be of my own doing. I had attached a filter to the "letter" to select only a single date and soc. sec. number BUT...I also attached a query to the button used to print a check, to do the same thing. I removed the query from the button script and now the program comes up with a single record, like it should, without any errors. Thanks again for offering your valuable time.
