Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Old message board

Are the old message boards still accessible?

I recall addressing a situation a long while back and i seem to recall it being in the old boards.

    Thanks,
    Mike

      Mike,

Do you remember what the subject was? Somewhere I think I still have a copy of a database made by somebody (you can tell I've used it a lot lately!) which has most of the old messages. If you can remember the subject or give me some key words, I'll try to find the database.

        Mike,

There is an archive of some of the older message posts at the site
listed below. They range in date from late 1998 to mid 2000

            Mike,

If the above suggestions don't hit pay dirt post the topic. I used to (and sort of still do) maintain an indexed private archive of extremely specific message board items which may bear on your issue.

              Cal,

When I first started using Alpha Four in 1996, I had a number of discussing with Scott Robinson who used to, or maybe still does, work for Alphasoftware.

The issue was trying to post the subassembly items used of an assembly to the stock amount field of it's partfile record. I was able to get the posting to work in the parent (Add the completed assembly) but only have a subraction post on the components of the first related component in the BOM and no related records thereafter unless I tabbed into each line item and place each line item into change mode.

I'm trying to recreate that and am having a hard time. I'd like to try to get it working using scripts, then when I get completely over to A5, set it up to work in there.

              Any thoughts?

              Thanks guys!!!
              Mike

Mike, I found the "Techboard" that I was thinking of but didn't see anything that looked like it related to your particular problem. Here's a list of all the topics I found for 'posting' in case any ring a bell:

                11/11/1998 Post to parent record
                02/17/1999 Posting field rule detail
02/23/1999 Delete posting from child records
06/17/1999 Posting group totals by field rule
                11/14/1998 Summarize child records
06/29/1999 Unpost on delete in posting operation
07/09/1999 Calculated fields during a posting operation
07/31/1999 Calculated fields at the table level

I have no idea who created this "Techboard"... Bill Hanigsberg maybe? All I remember is that it seems like I downloaded it about 5 years ago - but obviously not ... it has a bunch of topics dated 11/1/98 thru 8/5/99.
