Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    question for Selwyn and Richard

Are there plans or can something be added to A5V5.
I have a need to be able to exchange information bewteen a PDA (Palm) and Alpha5. We are going to use handheld devices to capture time and tools in the field and move information from and to PDA's.
I know that Filemaker Pro just came out with Filemaker Mobile and I have purchased it to see if I can bring data from the PDA to the desktop and have Alpha recoginize it.
It would be nice to be able to upload data from PDA directly to an Alpha5 app and download data back to a PDA.
    Any Plans????

No offense, Charlie. Feature creep is endless. Lets get ver.5 out ASAP. Palm Pilot import/export sounds like a nice addon addin - later!

WASN'T TRYING TO HOLD UP V5.
ONLY ASKING A QUESTION ABOUT THEIR PLANS.
I DON'T EXPECT THEM TO HOLD UP THE RELEASE OF V5 FOR ONE FEATURE.
PETER: JUST CALM DOWN AND LET THEM ANSWER THE QUESTION SO I CAN RESPOND BACK TO MY SUPERVISION ABOUT IF THIS CAN BE DONE!

RE: question for Selwyn and Richard

A couple of years ago I showed a client how to export an inventory list from A5 to an excel spreadsheet and bring this into a handheld running Windows CE. The process works the other way around as well. I realize this is a little different than a sync that would extract the differences but thought it might help. Finally, it doesn't seem like too much of a jump to suppose that you might create your own "sync" scripts or operations in Alpha. The handheld I assume already includes minimal software to at least talk with a desktop machine.

          Charlie:

It is possible to set up a pretty seamless export/import to Palm using intermediary software to translate a comma delimited text file. We use HanDBase as our "translator" and we basically go one way, from Alpha to the Palm. I recall seeing Stephen Williams mention that he has done 2 way stuff. So, where a client really wants this stuff it's possible to give them a close facsimile of what a native Palm application would do.

            Charlie -
there are a number of choices of Palm packages to use data. The advantage that HandDbase has is it is relational on the palm - so I have a job file and a timelog file. I open the time log and it does lookups from the job file. Very powerful.

I proved the two way exchange, but I keep tinkering with my app, especially right now as I am writing a scheduling module and if the tables fields change the import export mappings get all messed up. Your tables need to be left alone, and I am not prepared to make that committment just yet.

Also up and coming is PalmDB. Has some pretty screen tools with tabbed forms etc, and also has relational database lookups. Also ships with dll's to run from third party apps, like Alpha. But it looks like a memory hog on the Palm side...

              Charlie,

I don't know about Winows for Handhelds (the new version of Windows CE). It has a Mobile Excel that syncs with any excel sheet in its directory on the pc.

You would export to the Excel file on that directory, and that's it. The same with the import. Windows ce automatically takes care of the syncing.

              Check it out.

              Good luck,

              TR

Charlie, I really am quite calm and I didn't suggest that your questioned shouldn't be answered. But, admittedly, I am impatient for ver. 5.
