Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5V4.03 Runtime vs A5V4.5 Full Version

Is there any incompatibility between A5V4.03 Runtime and A4V4.5 Full version.

I just downloaded the A4V4.5 upgrade and I was wondering if I must also upgrade my runtime version on all machines now or if I can wait.

    Thanks

    JP,

Did you mean A5v4.5 instead of A4v4.5. Yes? I'm not sure what you mean by waiting. There is nothing in Alpha that requires you to wait, that I know.

JP, I think there are two different products. An upgrade for the development (full) version and an upgrade for the runtime version. I do not think you can license the upgrade to the full version and use that to upgrade your runtime versions. If I've misunderstood your question be gentle, I haven't finished my second cup of coffee yet!

        Ken and Tom,

        What I mean is:

Can I use the A5V4.5 full version to edit an existing application and still run it with the runtime version 4.03 on other stations without any problem until I upgrade the Runtime version too.

I will download the Runtime upgrade too but may be only next week ( just do not have the time to upgrade all stations now or am I getting old and lazy).

I just do not want to reinstall the old A5V4.03 which I just upgraded yesterday.

I just want to make sure I wlll not cause any problem at the stations level for now.

        Thanks

          Hi,

Any new capabilities that you incorporate into you applications will not be able to be accessed with older versions.

I had that problem with the prior paches.

          All the best,

          TR

While it's always a good idea to have everyone on the same version it's not always possible, and that is certainly the case with a number of our clients.

I have had no problems whatsoever with compatibility between developing and modifying our app with the beta version of 4.5 and deploying those changes to users with the Runtime of 4.03 Build 224 and 230.

Just to add to what Finian Wrote.

Your v4 runtime will continue to work.

You can update/modify your apps in v4.5, but if you don't deploy with the v4.5 runtime, you wont get the stability and performance improvements that are offered by v4.5.

Hope this helps answer the question.

                Thanks

As I recall, there were two new Xbasic commands with v4.5 - "tbl>.Is_record_locked() and "fld>.Initial_Value_Get(). Obviously, you shouldn't expect to use the new Xbasic commands and have them work in v4.03. (I didn't bother to check so I could be proven wrong.)

Many thanks to all of you. I will upgrade all the stations but it may take a few days.

Thanks again, as always this board is of great help.
