Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    file transfers

Whenever I transfer databases that I have been working on elswhere from my zip drive to my D: drive something happens so that I get an expected value error. I can access it fine from my zip without any expected value message. If I put the database onto my C: from my zip it also works fine, but this is not where I want to keep my Databases. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

    Thanks,
    Koji

      RE: file transfers

Koji, Do this, transfer your databases as you do. Then open up the app and go to the tab that shows your table in your control panel. Then click on the last icon on the right of the control tool bar n the control panel. This will show you the path for each table in your app. I think you will find that one or more of your tables may be in a directory other than the master app. Many times users will change the directory of their master app for some reason and then create a new table in the app before restoring the directory name. A5 remembers the master path diretory but not the drive letter. In other words, if you have a master path app on C:PATH and you copy your app to D:PATH, all will be well. But, if you temporaraly change the directory on C:PATH to C:PATHX an then create a new table in your app, your app will remember that table as being located in *:PATHX. It is very important to organize your table directories. We have spent alot of useless time on these types of user errors. I'm not suggesting that this is your problem, only that it may be.

Sorry, Once again the back slash monster has gobbled up my backslashes and I have not yet had the time to digest the solutions that my fellow A5 companions have so graciously offered. Please imagine their attendence where necessary.

Jeff, which toolbar? which icon? I'd like to try this, but the default control panel toolbar doesn't seem to have the right icon available? (Maybe I'm missing something here...?)

          Thanks.

            Jeff - Tom:

Tom: I too didn't know about that. With the control panel as the active window, look up on the toolbar and you'll see the large icon, small icon, list, and details buttons. These are the same options as when you click "menu" on control panel. Cheeeeze, ya learn something new every day.
