Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    print preview problem

I am in the process of installing my software and transferring files to a new laptop running Windows ME. Thanks to suggestions from the A4 forum, my A4v6 database is working fine. Now I find I am having a problem with a database I set up with A5v4: a system for tracking entries for a homebrewing competition run annually by my husband's homebrewing club. I have used this system successfully for the last two years to generate entry lists for the various categories of beer to be judged and to produce a winners list at the end of the competition. On my new computer, I have been able to open the database, open individual tables, view forms and browses. However, whenever I attempt to generate and view a report, the computer appears to lock up completely. I get an almost blank screen with only a little undecipherable stuff at the top of the screen. The cursor disappears completely. A couple of times ctrl-alt-del (pressed twice) restarted the computer, but most times I have had to use the reset button as nothing else appears to have any effect.

I have put this database together without using scripting. Some day, I intend to go back and learn xbasic, but at this time I don't have time to spend on it. I need to get things going quickly, as the next club sponsored competition is coming up early in March. As a fallback, I could go back to the old laptop, but what fun is that? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

    What a worthy objective!

"...whenever I attempt to generate and view a report, the computer appears to lock up completely."

By "generate and view" do you mean preview and print or actually create a new report in the report editor? If the former is the case, I would look to printer drivers on the new machine and printer selection in the report editor. If the later, I would start by reinstalling Alpha 5.

      RE: print preview problem

      Sherrill,

If the problem is limited to previewing the report, try changing the screen resolution. Right click on the desktop, select properties, settings. If the resolution is higher than 800 X 600, set to 800 x 600.

      There can be only one.

        Sherrill,

I would install a different (or updated printer driver), or if you haven't installed one, add at least one. Make sure it is the default printer. Then try it.

That is a more likely case to be the problem than the resolution of the screen, but heck, try both!

          RE: print preview problem

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. The problem appeared to be only in the print preview. Ira, I had already downloaded and installed an updated driver for my printer. Stan, your suggestion did the trick. Print preview seems to work perfectly in 800 x 600 resolution, but not at all in higher resolution. Everything else seems to work as well. Of course I will have to use a magnifying glass to read anything on the screen - 800 x 600 display on this screen appears smaller than my old laptop's 12 inch screen. Now if I can just get all those blank pages between printed report pages to go away...

          Thanks again.

            RE: print preview problem

            Sherrill:

Glad it worked out. Perhaps Ohlen Cartmell can sell you more powerful glasses to help with the resolution issue.

Blank pages in a report can usually be traced to page size and margin width settings. For example, if you change printers (and drivers) and the new printer has a slightly larger non-printing area at the edge of each sheet, you might get a blank page holding the little bit of empty space that wasn't able to be "printed" on the previous page. So you've got to fiddle around with it.
