Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Script with variable

    I have a set with ord_head as the parent, and rosterne as a child. I want to copy a value from one field in Ord_head and have it fill in the value in a field in rosterne on initiate. I tried the following script, but it says "no such field". How do I refer correctly to the parent table field? , or is there another problem?

    ''XBasic
    tbl=Table.current()
    DIM TELEPHONE AS C
    TELEPHONE = :ord_head->homephone
    rosterne->hphone=VAR->TELEPHONE

    RE: Script with variable

    Hello Richard,

    tbl=Table.current()

    this gives you a pointer to the main table of the set, probably you ord_head table if I understand you correctly.

    DIM TELEPHONE AS C
    TELEPHONE = tbl.homephone
    rosterne->hphone=VAR->TELEPHONE

    The above will set the variable telephone to the value in homephone field.
    I'm not so sure about your last line. I would probably get a pointer to this table as well and set the fields value such as:

    tbl2 = table_get("rosterne")
    tbl2.hphone = telephone

    When setting the values directly to the table you will need to deal with the mode of the table, ie: making sure it is in enter mode.
    At the least you will need to refresh the control on the form. Is this in a browse? You can reference the form directly and write to the control on the form such as:

    :form_name:hphone.value = telephone
    :form_name:hphone.refresh()

    You should also use the forms alias rather than its name.

    Good luck,
    Jim

      RE: Script with variable

      You could also fill the child field by defining that's field value in field rules. You could use either a calc field or a default value, depending on whether or not you want to change it afterward, and whether or not you want it to change if the parent changes.

      The expression for the calc or default field in the field rules for rosterne would be:

      LOOKUPC("F",VALUE,"FIELD","ord_head.DBF","INDEX ")

      where VALUE could be the value of the linking field in ord_head, FIELD is the field in ord_head that you want to copy to the field in rosterne, and INDEX is the index name in ord_head. The "F" means find the first match. Also, note that all parameters EXCEPT the VALUE are in quotes. VALUE is not in quotes if it is a field name.

        RE: Script with variable

        Thanks for the help. The main problem was that I was using a wrong field name. The first part of your script works fine. The field to fill in is on a form, so when you come to the field, it fills in on initiate, since you are already in entry mode.

          Thanks for the help. I tried this formula as a default value, but kept getting the message "'Id_number' not found. Id_number is the linking field value, and also the name of the index for this field. Here is the formula that I tried:

          LOOKUPC("F",Id_Number,"ord_head.dbf","Id_Number")

            RE: Script with variable

            Looks like you are missing one of the required parameters

            Character String = LOOKUPC( MatchType, KeyValue, LookupExpression,LookupTable, IndexTagName)
            There can be only one.
