Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help!! Can't create set

I just tried to recreate one of my most important sets from A4 in A4V4.03 and either I'm missing something or there is a major flaw in A5.
All of our business apps are developed around using 4 properties of the material we sell for indexing. GRADE, TYPE, FINISH, SIZE. The indexes we use are similar to: UT(grade)+" "+UT(type)+" "+UT(finish)+" "+UT(size). The reason for this is it allows really simple searching. It also allows me to create indexed with the field order changed to allow searching on a different property, depending on the customers needs.
    THE PROBLEM
In A4 I could create a set, for example:
PO_LINE--->INVENTORY (one to one) and link using one of these compound indexes. We have never had a problem with this arrangement.
It does not appear possible to do this in A5V4 or A5V5 as the linking field fill in box is too short to allow entering the linking value.

I really need this capability. If I can't do this it blows the whole conversion out of the water as my last 6 or 7 years of data becomes useless.

Any help or ideas will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance
    Russ

    RE: Help!! Can't create set

While I hope this is fixed in the release version of A5V5, I have found a workaround. (I should engage brain before letting fingers do the walking)
I created a calc field = to the index exp and indexed on it and linked on it. Its one extra step but it works.

      RE: Help!! Can't create set

It's very easy. First, get rid of your calculated field. (Sometimes they're necessary but I think good db design practice is to avoid them whenever possible. Since you can have calculated 'field boxes' on forms and reports, it is seldom necessary to have them in the table itself. Unfortunately, this is not always true on some other databases.)

      - In the Set Editor window, right-click on the child table to get to the Ling Properties window.
      - In the Parent Linking Field drop-down, go all the way to the top of the list and you will see "Expression". Click in this and type your A4 expression in the expression builder. YOu should be able to type it exactly as it was in A4.
      - Repeat the above step for the Child Linking Field.
      - Repeat both of the above 2 steps for each child table.

Thanks Cal, I agree with you on the calc fields. Once again this is so easy if you only know where to look. That info wasn't in the manual as far as I can tell. I guess I won't switch to Access just yet!:)
I hope in V5 the manuals explain things, I seem to be asking a lot of really dumb questions on this board on things that should be in the manual.

          Russ:

I too, ask really dumb questions and am gratified when the answer returns with no "MAN, That was really dumb!" comments.

I guess we've all been there [I still am] and can't help but understand.
