Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Modem Question

Has anyone had any experience with a 56k v90 modem not running at full speed? My modem is a Boca Tidal Wave 56k. The best I can get out of it is 34V. Changing the settings to 56V results in no connect as my user name and password are being verified. I spen 1.5 Hr on the phone w/ my ISP so it appears that 34V is the best it will do.

I checked the Boca web site for updated drivers but wasn't able to clearly determine any issues. I also emailed Boca tech support so I'll see what they say.

I realize that phone lines have some effect but V90 is supposed to sail right along.

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and if so, what did you do about it?

Also, is there a modem that is better than others?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    RE: Modem Question

    Hey Kenn,

A V90 56K Modem should be set at 115200 for maximum speed, but as you have already found out it depends mainly on the ISP and the bandwith they have available. Make sure you don't have the option "Connect at this speed only"(or something along those lines). Also you only have TCP/IP selected in your dial-up properties. There are a few tweaks that also can be made .. Hope this helps ..

      Kenn

I think U.S. Robotics website has a utility that you dial up and it checks and rates you phone line for maximum bps.

      It's even an 800 number, I think.

I live in the country; called the number and the result was 33000. Occaisonally I do better than that and my modem is a V90 as well.

          RE: Modem Question

          Scott & Ken,

I checked the speed in the modem settings and found it can be set in two places, the modem itself and in dialup networking. The modem was set to 115200 and dialup networking to 57600. Interesting to note that my ISP had me set the dialup networking to 57600 and didn't say anything about changing the modem. Made both the same and it did increase the speed some but not enough to brag about. The test takes anywhere from 10.89 to 12.19 to download.

I also checked the US Robotics web site but didn't find a link to a phone # so sent them an email. If I recveive a phone number, I'll post it for others.

If one assumes the phone lines are capabvle of 56K, how about the inhouse lines?

          Thanks,

          kenn

            RE: Modem Question

Ken, no matter how your modem is set up, the best speed
a 56k modem can reach (downloading) is about 33k.
It's just the nature of the beast.

              RE: Modem Question

Actually I believe a 56K modem will download at up to about 52K. The only thing you can change is the init string for the modem. Assuming that the init string is optimized for the modem, you are at the mercy of the phone co. The phone lines are most often the cause of slow speeds. You can call the phone co and complain, but you could also beat your head against the wall, either will probably improve your connection about the same.
I have found that often USR modems will made the best use of whatever connection you have got. We have a modem server and we currently use USR Couriers, external for the modems. I tried a few others but the usr's seemed to work consistently the best. The only complaint I have about the Courier's is the price. They are kind of pricy.

                RE: Modem Question

Russ, you're correct - I said it backwards. You can (theoretically) get up to about 52k DOWNLOADING, only about
32-33 k UPLOADING. You will probably not ever come close,
on either one, due to line conditions.

                  RE: Modem Question

I plan on calling the phone co just to hera them blame the modem, my isp and shirk the fact that their phone lines are not capable of 56k. They did bury new lines last summer (fiber optic I think) so I'll see what they have to say about that. Dish network is supposed to have an option available next summer so that might be better but the price will be stiff. Still, it would be nice to get to at least 33300.

                    RE: Modem Question

I consistently get 48k ish on our lines at home and occasionally up to 51k. It can be done, I guess our lines are pretty good. Apparently we are pretty close to DSL lines also. That would be nice.

                      Phone, Phone, Phone.

The phone company can check your modem lines, however DON'T trust the results. I recently went through two weeks of very frequent T1 problems that the phone company said was my equipment problems. After replacing the equipment three times I finally threatened to sue. The company then transferred me to their technical department. Apparently their service dept. gets charged for this and as a result do not want to use their technical support.
Using the ping command, I routinely ping all the stores to check responses. I go by ms response times. The command is
                      ping -n 10 (IP address)

I look for consistent times and I track these responses over time.
