Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    consecutive numbering

    happy new year to everyone

specially to any one that can help

i would like to have the default number for a new entry to be one greater than the previous one (say each time a new invoice is generated)

how can i put this as a formula or calculation in the default section of the field properties?

i have been using auto increment but it has drawbacks

    kindest regards

    RE: consecutive numbering

This subject is discussed regularly and lots of ideas have been suggested. Try searching this message forum.

Also, check the Message Forum called 'Code Archive', and look for the message thread there called 'Solutions'. You'll find two alternate approaches...

        i cannot use scripting

i was hoping to be able to use the 'previous' command in the expression builder

where could i get help on that?

        regards

          RE: consecutive numbering

Eric, previous() means different things in different contexts. Its action is consistent, but if the current index or query is different than you might imagine it can lead you to unexpected places.

If I were you I'd spend some time trying to figure out why the autoincrement rule restarted at 000000. My guess is that your system saved a record with a blank value in the key field somehow. Or perhaps your users have figured out a way to save a record with a zero value in the key field. Maybe the easiest solution is to find and block these occurrences. For example, you might use a field rule to require that the key field always have a value greater than 1000. Or you might want to make the key field 'required', or otherwise prevent a record from being saved with no data in the key field. Reading the many message threads on this subject will help you see the different ways the autoincrement field rule can run astray.

In the worst case you could do your new data entry work in two stages. In stage one you find the 'last' record, suggest the next number to the user, and let them set it by saving the record to disk. then validate it before doing the rest of the data entry in other fields in that same record. If it matches another record already in the table start over. Once validation succeeds, open the same record in change mode and let the user edit the other fields, but don't let them touch the key field again.

            RE: consecutive numbering

            Eric:
I use a different concept on my purchase order application.
I have a situation where I have to have a unique number for each job number purchase order combination.(Each job number would start out with po 1 then 2 then 3.) The auto increment way that I use increases the center group of numbers in my PO number(U4941-0001-C) the 0001 would auto increment.
Here is how I do that.
I have a Job file or a system file that has a field called nextpo defined as a numeric 8.
When I click the enter button to enter a new PO the script reads the system table, locates the correct job number, reads the value of the next po field into a variable.Increment the next po field by 1.(nextpo=nextpo+1) and returns to the entry screen and shows the next po vaiable on the screen.
            Hope this idea helps.
