Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with "file.temp_create("C:"

    I'm trying to create a temp file so that I may manipulate some text. However, everytime I try running the program, I get an error that reads:

    Script:Find_AKAs line:22
    filenameTemp=file.temp_create("C:My Documents")
    file not found

    I took this example right from the XBasic reference guide and it is not working. :-( Why? The following is a chunk of code that is involved:

    '--Write to temp file then save over DocketAKA.txt--
    filenameTemp = file.temp_create("C:My Documents")
    fpntrTemp = file.(filenameTemp,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
    fpntrTemp.file_write("Defaults:")
    fpntrTemp.file_flush()
    fpntrTemp.file_close()
    fpntrTemp = file.open(filenameTemp,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)

    What is wrong with the above code? Is there a miss print? Should the third line be "file.open" and not "file.()"?

    RE: Problem with

    Here's one thought:

    Try eliminating the space in the file name, then see if it works. For example, try "tmp_file" or something else simple.

    I have seen a space in a file name cause other problems in Alpha, because the program sometimes puts in an underscore where the space is.

      RE: Problem with

      The file you are referencing is actually a directory. This web page for some reason will not transfer over a back slash. There should be a back slash between the C: and My Documents. (My Documents is a default directory windows uses. I use this directory for convenience and keeping things in order from computer to computer)

      For some reason, the command line in question, is not being accepted by the compiler. It may be do to something I haven't included or it may be confused with something else. However, I'm very suspecious about the XBasic reference guide being correct. I have found mistakes in it before. The only problem is, I cannot find another related sample of .temp_create(). Thanks for your input.

        RE: Problem with

        Nathan, I couldn't get it to work either.

        Remember that the backslash character is also the line continuation character, so it's often necessary to substitute the string "Chr(92)" for the backslash when working with path and filenames.

        However, even when substituting for the continuation character, the temp_create() method returned error messages.

        Interestingly, the xbasic explorer does not contain temp_create() as a listed method of the file system object.

        I wonder if support for this has been dropped from the language, but not the book...?

        As a work around you might want to use file.create() and furnish an explicit filename.

        If you figure out how to get temp_create() going, let us know.

          I also can't get file.temp_create() to work in v4, although
          it works in the beta version of v5.
          Why not just create your own temporary file name and use it, as
          in
          Code:
          dir_put("c:&92;My Documents")
          if file.exists("mytemp") then
           file.remove("mytemp")
          end if
          fp=file.create("mytemp",file_rw_exclusive)
          fp.file_write("anything")
          fp.flush()
          fp.close()

            Just make it
            "c:|My Documents" and translate the | into a backslash
