Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    First try using x-basic

I have a database set up with the following fields:
Tran_type, 1 Character which has set up for P(payment) or C(credit)
    Store, 25 - characters long
If I choose P as the Tran_type I want the phase "Payment - Thank You" to be automaticly entered into the Store field. Thanks for any help anybody can give me.

    RE: First try using x-basic

No need for xbasic here...use field rule conditional defaults. On the Store fields default have a condition Tran_type = "P" with the reslutant value "Payment - thank You"

        RE: First try using x-basic

I have tried using the conditional default for the "Store" field, and that takes me into the expression builder, is this what you meant? I have tried to use the if function, if (tran_type = "P", Store="Payment - Thank You), "" When I click on the evalate button, I always get the error message 'Read past end of file', that I don't understand, I am not reading a file, I am reading another fields (tran_type) result, either a P or C. Thanks for any help you can give me. Gerald Greb

Gerald - look for "Cascading List" in the manual, or Alpha Help.

              Gregg,

              I did the following:

Field set as character (P or C)
then set the Store field as an calculated field.

the calculation would be as follows (called Store)

              if(type_tran="P","Payment - Thank You",if(type_tran="C","Credit - Thank You","You dummy, enter P or C"))

                  OOPS..Thats Gerald, not Gregg

when I created the calculated item and then
evaluated it, I got the 'read past end of file'.
When I place the field on the form the width
was only like 0.115 which I believe was caused
by the width of the calculated field reading the
single character of P or C. However, I went to
the fields properties and set it to 25 and it
                  worked...

That didn't work either. Maybe some explation is in order. The field "Tran_type" is one character long and is set for the default value of "C", the "store" field is 40 characters long, if the Tran_Type = "P" then I want the store field to have the value of "Payment-Thank You" and have that displayed in the store field, if it isn't a "P" then it is a "C" and I want to enter the store name in the store field. Thanks again for any help you can give me. Gerald Greb

                      Check out this table...
Tran has two fields, Tran and Store.

                      Tran field rules
                      default is "C"
lookups are "C" and "P", force closest match

                      Store field rules
Conditional default is "Payment-Thank You" if Tran = "P"
                      Lookup on Previous values

                      Is this close?

Yes, that is it. This worked for me, IF(TRAN_TYPE="P","Payment - Thank You"," ").
I didn't try to evaluate it, I just hit the "OK" button and tried it out and it worked, When "P" was choosen, Payment - Thank you was entered into the Store field, when "C" was choosen, nothing was entered into the Store field and I was able to enter the store information. I don't even know if what I did was right or not, I just know it worked. Thanks and merry christmas. Gerald Greb
