Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    test tools application

    To all:
    take a look at this test application
    3-tables-items-whtransheader-whtransactions
    1-set whtranset based on all 3 tables.
    when you ope the form whrec001
    top part header
    left side transactions
    right side items
    question?
    when I double click on a row in the items table I want it to enter a new record in the transactions table.
    I tried to use the on row doubleclick-doesn't seem to work?

    RE: test tools application

    Charlie, Can you post the script you are trying to use on double click? If you have not already tried this try: Lookup the browse label in the transcations browse properties and then use it the following command for actions on double click from any of the other browses:

    browse2.new_record()

    Where browse2 is the label of the transactions browse.
    This works for us.

      RE: test tools application

      Charlie, I took a look at your form and your onrowdblclick event can be used to update the transaction table.

      Try changing the script to something like this:

      tbl = table.current(2) 'pointer to transaction table
      if tbl.mode_get()>0 then 'already in change mode
      ui_msg_box("Oops","Save pending change first")
      else
      tbl.enter_begin()
      tbl.itemno = var->itemno
      tbl.enter_end(.t.)
      end
      parent.resynch()
      end

      However, I think you'd be better served to remove the Item table from your set. Records in the items table disappear when you enter a new parent record, right?

      Consider filling an array with values from the item table when the form opens, and using ui_get_list_array() to display it... User selection from the displayed array could be used to add transaction records.

      Alternatively, you might put the items in a separate form, load it when your transaction form loads, but hide it. Display it for user selection whenever the transaction browse object gets focus. hide it when the user picks a value.

      Hope this helps.

        RE: test tools application

        This points up a design development problem - there are so many ways that WILL work, how do you decide which one to use?

        I use get_list_array() in one module and it works great. I have a dialog form for lookup in another. Works great. I have field rule lookup in another place. Works great. I just discovered popup dialogs where the form stays on top, but you can give focus to the background and I see real possibilities...

        In the end it is a matter of personal style, and consistency is what is needed. I think that as you get more experience you are not looking for THE way, rather than YOUR way...

        I just replaced a form based on a set with 6 tables that had tabbed objects with embedded forms and browses up the yin yang and never worked very smoothly though it got me through the night. I doubt anyone else would have had any fun, though...Anyway the new version based on the same set fits in one third of the screen, has two browse objects, and seven buttons. Four buttons popup forms to do stuff, then you drop back to the two browses to see whats next. All this because I had sat on my ugly ass form for a year until I really grasped what was happening with data flow and made a much better one that reflects which table should hold which data...

        Made me think it could be instructive and entertaining to have some kind of Database competition. People have to design an application to produce specific reports given specific real world circumstances. Set design, form design and report design all integrated...Keep it shrt, yet twisted and obtuse so there are many choices. Or devise the most obtuse confused script that works, but no one knows why - I believe there is a c programming competition like this. Tons of embedded eval() for example...

        Am I sick?
