Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    need help on screen design

I am designing screens for a tool inventory project.
I am using a set with whseheader, whsetransactions and items.
Items is a table that has all tools in inventory.

attached is a sample screen design
At the top is the whseheader information.
On the left side is the whse transactions.
on the right hand side I need to have the items in inventory show all the time.
The user would then select(double click) from the items on the right and it would enter into the current record on the left.
I tried a subform but I cannot get the link right.
It is like a lookup but the lookup table has to be on the screen all the time.
    any ideas

How have you spread the data across the tables? I am not sure why you need a subform if you have a meaningful set design..

I would make a set along the lines

    Warehouse Parent field WHSID
    |
    ===>Items Child link WHSID
    |
    ===>Transactions Child link WHSID+Incoming = .t.

Then the warehouse info goes on the header and you have two embedded browses. One of Items in stock, the other incoming transactions. Double click an incoming transaction and it creates an item on hand.

My question is how did the incoming transaction data get into a table? Couldn't that operation include making them on-hand? Or do I misunderstand...

      Steve:
The warehouse header for receipts (tools comming into whse)has :
      transaction number(link)
      from warehouse
      from job

      the warehouse detail transactions has:
      transaction number(link)
      item number
      description
      quantity

      the item table has:
      item number
      description
I want the item file to show all records in the table so the
user can select the items to go into the warehouse detail transactions.

I think I understand what you are attempting, so for what it's worth here are my thoughts....I don't think you are going to have any luck synching the two one to many browses. In order to show all inventory items at all times you need a one to many set that links to your header record. To do this, just as an example, you would need a field on your header record with a value of "1" and a field on your inventory record with a value of "1". These fields would have no other purpose but to provide the link. Your other one to many set links the transaction number of your header record to the transaction number of your detail warehouse transactions. They are both related to the header record but not to each other making any kind of automatic synching impossible. You could probably write a script to take the id value of the currently selected item from your "all item browse" and put it in to the item id field of your warehouse transaction record when adding or changing transactions. This would be the only time the two records would be in "synch". If you wanted to display certain item values (description or unit of measure) every time you selected one of your inventory transactions you could either use the "Lookupc" function (pretty slow) or add a second link to the item file in your set using a one to one first match from the item id of your transaction. Good luck with your project.

Charlie, how about a summary of your solution (for future reference)?

            Thanks.
