Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Form Load Problems

Ken, the fact that you are on a network may make some difference that I have no experience with.

However - it sounds like the same situation I ran into. I have an opening form "Master Menu." From that form users pick 'where they want to go today.'

When I would pick to enter a particular form (only that one offending form, all others opened correctly,) it bombed and I got a white screen and had to reboot to correct.

I 'think' that is what you are saying happens. If the same thing happens to all your forms, disregard.

If the above is correct, have you tried making changes to the offending form?

      RE: Form Load Problems

      Bob, Tom, and Martin.

Tom: I did it - Got into the registry and found under Hkey Current User - software alpha software - bla bla bla TABLES Under TABLES I find 'A_case.Dbf' listed at the top--- Interestingly enough the same area of my wife Registry DOES not List the A_case nonesense. Just 7 other dbs.

I did as you suggested - uninstalled the program and removed all discovered cases of Alpha anything in the registry. Reinstalled Alpha and have exactly the same problems.

Martin, I've done as you've suggested copying my wife's copy of the app into my machine - SAME FREAKIN' problems. In addition to all of this - - with the 'working' copy from wifie's machine having run, the registry NO AGAIN has 'A_case.dbf' right back where I deleted it. Man, is alpha writing the registry as out applications load and run?? Who knows?

Now, I got out my wallet and and made 5 calls to Alpha pay support; talked to machines; give the CC number and Expiration Date - get approved for the charge; wait on the line for several minutes; and get the recording "We're unable to handle your call at this time - Please call again later". This, my friends, is a freakin DEAD END and you get there with no human contact whatever. It appears that Alpha has no support even tho they have the charge structure quite well defined at $2.00 a minute.

What are we all doing here?

Thanks to All....... I'm no longer anxious about Verson 5.

        RE: Form Load Problems

Ken, if you want to zip the database and post it here, we might be able to see what's going on.

Please clarify some things in the meantime.

        1) can you open and run the sample invoice application which ships with Alpha Five? If so, it's likely that Alpha Five is correctly installed.

        2) can you open the tables in your own database, using the default browse?

        3) can you open the tables in your own database, using the default form?

          RE: Form Load Problems

          Tom Cone:

          1. I can open everything from control panel. Default browses, tables, and created forms. I have one form with a lookup that won't open ... msg "Can't find Customer.dbf... bla.. access denied". Another form [you saw it] has a button to open a second set - the checkbook thing you worked on -- it 'can't find' find that second set and presents the default "a_case stuff".

Normal logic (if I'm capable of it) would suggest that something is wrong in the program files or configuration -- especially when you consider that it's adding that 'A_case.dbf' to the registry, apparently 'on-the-fly'.
And when you consider also, that the program functions quite well with the application on a brand new install on the wife's machine.

I think , God forbid, that I'm going to have to do a complete blank-out of Windows and re-install both Windows and Alpha afterwards. GEEEEEZ - that's got to be a last resort.

Tom - Do this --- Look in YOUR registry with an 'Alpha Software' search and see 'Tables' under that folder - I'll give you odds that it names several or all of your db's and does not have that 'A_Case.dvf' stuff anywhere. How it the hell is it getting in there?

Thanks for your concerns as always - maybe this will be a learning experience for all of us.

Ken, before you reformat and reinstall Windows, how about uploading a zipped copy of the database? I've reviewed the entire message thread on your problem and this suggestion has been made several times.

                RE: Form Load Problems

if the 1st field on your form is a lookup - then that most likely is the problem - i have discovered that the first and last field in tab order should not be lookups

also that message is what i get when a lookup isn't functioning properly.

                  RE: Form Load Problems

Hey - Thanks Everybody I can't believe that you can all be so helpful and concerned but for the moment - I'm outta here. I have a client on A4 who's hammering about 10 million annually thru my app. This is the third day of the problem and it's not resolved. I can't imagine trying to appease that guy when his program is trashed for 3 days in a row.

I've felt comfortable with all your availability thru this learn cycle but when Paid Help at Alpha failed for a whole day, I have to consider another media for Windows development. I realize that help from say, Microsoft would be as unavailable as well, but think of the volumes of information available out there - third party stuff - for an Access developer. In this media, we're stuck with the message board and Pete Wayne's books.

I suspected MY application was the problem, but when I opened Alpha's Own Sample invoice app and it performed with the same, identical problems, we all have to conclude that something's wrong with the program files or configuration. If That level of support is unavailable - What can any of us do?

Thanks again to all but for the moment --- I'm outta here.

                    RE: Form Load Problems

Ken, I've checked the registry here as you asked. I do not find the a_case.dbf file that you mention. In looking at the database tables listed in the Tables folder you referred me to, I see all the tables I've opened with Alpha Five, or seemingly so. It appears Alpha Five is keeping a master list of tables, with selected information about each, in the registry. I suspect the entry you saw was written there when Alpha Five was unable to open your form. As you know, each form is based on a table or set, which is itself opened when the form loads. If alpha Five is instructed to open a table (in your script), but it can't for some odd reason, it must be trying to open the a_case table instead. If you look at an alphabetic listing of the tables in your program folder you'll find this near the top, indeed, it's probably the first table in the list... my guess is that this is why alpha five is trying to open it. You probably have a simple pathing error, and Alpha Five is treating the program directory as the current folder, instead of the folder in which your actual database resides.

I'm not going to spend any more time on this unless you post your database and forms so we can take a look at it. Good luck with your project.

Thank you all for not spending any more time on this.

And certainly thank you all for the time you have given it. Especially Tom. This, indeed, has been a learning experince and I'm grateful for all of your collective help and concerns.

I have decided to abandon any further efforts to develop in this media.

                          Guys:
This board is both a personal help and learning experience for us all. It would be unfair of me to end this thread without telling you all what I found. So.....

Like the Clinton campaign of 4 years ago where the slogan was "It's the economy Stupid".......... "It's [probably] the registry Stupid". The "[probably]" remark, of course, confirms that one really can't be SURE of anything. I deltree-deleted the whole Windows subdirectory; reinstalled Windows; reinstalled Alpha; and the problem was solved. We're having all of the horrors of getting the other software reinstalled and getting all of the perpherials configured but, at least, Alpha and all apps resident and created perform as advertised NOW.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Charlie, Finian, Peter, Tom, Martin, and Robert. Maybe you guys ought to take you helpful, positive, and productive attitudes to Florida and find us a president!

                          Thanks again,

                          Ken
