Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Index Skips Record

    I am having a problem with a table sorted by file number. When I do a find by key in any of my forms, certain records (three or four out of about 1,000 records in the table) are not found. Instead, the following record in the index is found and I have to page up to see the previous record, the one I was looking for. There is no problem with the rest of the records in the table, just those specific three or four records. There is no consistency that I can detect to the records that don't work (similar numbers, spaced evenly throughout the table, etc.)

    This happens on all forms I create, even a test form with only the field number record. It does not happen if I'm using the default browse or default form (but if I create a form based on the default form, it does happen).

    The problem persists even if I rebuild the indexes or create a new index on file number.

    Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be happening? Thanks.

    RE: Index Skips Record

    Post some examples of finds that work and finds that don't and maybe we can offer specific help.

    In the meantime, if I were having this trouble I'd check the definition of the index to see how the index key is formatted. I'd especially watch for leading or trailing blank spaces. Then I'd check the key field in the 'troublesome' records. Is it formatted *exactly* as your key, or does it have leading blanks which are interfering with the find?

      RE: Index Skips Record

      The file number field is a seven-character field that includes the last two digits of the current year as the first two characters with the remaining five numbers used to number the files consecutively throughout the year.

      Some indexes take into account the Y2K problems of this numbering format (format was created before A5 application) by adding "20" in front of the number if the first two characters of the field are less than "80" and adding "19" if the first two characters is "80" or more. Some indexes, however, are based solely on the 7-character file number field. For instance, File_No is sorted by File number with no filters; Activefile is sorted by File number, filtering out inactive records.

      If I do a Find by Key for 0001191 with the Activefile index active, record 0001196 is displayed (the first active file after 0001191). If I do a Find by Key for 0001191 with the File_No index active, record 0001192 is displayed. Paging up after running the find takes me to 0001191. (But if I do the same while looking at the default form, the correct record is displayed immediately).

      However, if a do a Find by Key for 0001190 or 0001196 with either index active, the correct record is displayed.

        Any chance you could post a sample set of records and indexes from your database?

        It sounds as though the find by key is failing on the actives file... or the form is itself moving the record pointer when a record is fetched...

        The latter might explain why the default form works, but your real form does not.

          RE: Index Skips Record

          Once in a great while I have this problem with some customers. In most cases, I can solve it by deleting the CDX file and re-creating the index. Apparently, that file can get corrupted somehow.

          Here's a script I use to update indexes, which will also create a new index when you delete the CDX:

          tbl = table.open("activity")
          index_create_begin("Actid", "ACTID", "", "I")
          index_add("Id", "ID", "", "I")
          index_add("ACT_U", "Actid", "", "U")
          tbl.index_create_end()

            Thanks, Tom, for your help. In trying to narrow out the unnecessary files so I'd only post the applicable files, I think I discovered my problem. I forgot to mention that the forms were based on a set and apparently the problem was at the grandchild level, where an index I hadn't even considered had become corrupted. Thanks again for looking at the problem.

              Thanks, Bill. Before I saw your message I came to the same conclusion (it was just an index in a grandchild table that I hadn't even considered). Thanks for the poiner about re-creating the indexes also.
