Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup Tables

I am setting up lookup tables in my new application. I have Alpha 5 Version 4.03 build 230. My problem is trying to get the lookup tables names of the fields to be different then the filed names in the structure of my table. Any help will be appreciated.

Also does A5 Ver 4.3 have a spell checker? Or is there a way of attaching one?

    RE: Lookup Tables

After you set up your table structures, right click on the table that you want to put information into.
    Edit field rules
    Click on the lookup tab
    select the lookup database
select the linking and display fields
go to the left box and select the field containing the data that you want.
go to the right side of the box and select the field to be filled in.
select yes or no to display the field in the pop up box.
continue for as many fields that you want to fill in.
You can play with the maximize feature and the display location on the screen.
As long as the fields are the same structure type(char, numeric, date) the fields should fill in fine.

Yes the fields will fill in but how can I change the name on the Lookup fields? When i click Lookup i want different names on the lookup then the field names in the structure.

        RE: Lookup Tables

I don't know of a way to do this with the default lookup dialogue form.

It is possible to design your own form based on the source lookup table. That form could include a browse object with the columns you want, and you could put labels above each column to suit your needs. The OnRowDbleClick event in the browse object can be programmed to return values to the calling form. A 'Choose it' button could duplicate this function. Both would also automatically close the custom lookup form.

In the calling form you would include a button to call the custom 'lookup' form.

Also, to do this, you must disable the lookup field rule, so the user will rely on your custom lookup form only.

This takes longer to do than creating the field rule table lookup, but it gives you more control over the appearance of the lookup form.

          Tom:

Doesn't the "default descriptive name" set in field rules control the labels in the default lookup form? If so this would be how to get the desired labels.

I know this controls the field labels on other layouts.

Nope--doesn't work there. Sorry for the false trail; should have checked first.

I believe Ver. 5 provides more control there and elsewhere.

                Bill:

if you are trying to have a different label displayed for each field other than the name of the field use field rules and assign a Default descriptive name. the Default descriptive name will be displayed. But it is the one you will have to reference.
