Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with new feature

    Howdy y'all,
I have an application that has been in use for about 18 months now that works flawlessly thanks to much help from this Board. Management has now expressed a desire to have new hires input their basic info (Name, DOB, Address, etc) rather than have them fill out a paper form which is then data entered by one of our clerks.

We will dedicate a PC (probably an old Pentium 60 w/NT4) exclusively for this purpose. I have unlimited run time licenses.

There are several considerations from my perspective. One involves security so that if two new hires enter info back-to-back, one can't see the other's info. How do I control that?

Another question...should we export/import...or would an append operation be better? I've read something about a "transaction table (?)"...would something like that be applicable here?

Since the person responsible for the program probably would not be attempting to bring in the data every day (work scheduling), what impact might that have?

As you can see, I'm fishing for some thoughts and ideas on how to set this up since this will be a new undertaking for me. As usual, I will appreciate your comments.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    RE: Help with new feature

I'm thinking along the lines of having a "basic data" table which your new hire admiistrative person would duplicate to a new table with the new employee's name before the new hire arrives.

You could then have a employee data entry form with a button calling a ui_get_file() function so the new hire could select their own name and fill in the form.

Once the entry is filled out the administrative person would append the data from the named basic data file to yur master employee records.

Just a rough idea of how I might approach the situation. Didn't address the security issue although the named basic data file could be deleted once the append is done.

The transaction table you mention is the table "from which" data is transferred, i.e. you append from a transaction table to a master table. Transaction and master relative only to the current operation.
    There can be only one.

      Steve:

the data entry screen used by the new hires should start new record mode. then each new employee would only see empty fields that they must fill.

when all is done for the day the HR person can trigger an append to the master Personnel file.

or you can have another screen come up and the HR person can select those records that must be appended to the master personnel file.

      hope this helps.

You could just provide a form that is nothing but variables, wiht all values initially set to blank. The user fills in the variables, and you use that information to add a new record.

An advantage of this is that it's very easy to check for required information.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. It's given me a starting point and I'll probably be back with a few more specific questions later on.

Not to put a damper on things, but, how are you going to control security?

            ie:
Is the person entering information actually the correct person?
What kind of verifications is being done on the info entered?
            what about keying errors?
Will a paper trail be produced?

Usually, HR is fairly strict about who they allow to key data.

              Tom,
Those are all issues that have to be dealt with before anything is implemented and I get the happy task of doing it. Basically, management is convinced that having a new employee enter their personal data will save time and improve productivity, etc., etc.

              All feedback is greatly appreciated.
              Thanks,
              Steve
