Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

System Problems whilst using Full Text Indexing

Having finally gotten the "Full Index Search" method working, Alpha5 has become unstable. I update "Identity" field with a new value and tack the original vale of "Identity" onto the end of the string in "OLD-ID" (the field that has the "Full Text Index" built for. when I {F9} I get random characters appear in both the "Identity" & "Old_ID" fields or I get a blank record shown. If I restart Alpha5 the corrupt values are still there!!
then I got message "Not a valid index handle" with an OK button. The only way I could get out of it was by using the three-button panic keys.
I then deleted the "Full Text Index" and the problem disappeared.
The Full Text index was setup thus (by the system)

    Name "Index_Keyw"
    expression: keyswordsi(OLD-ID,VAR->EXCLUDED_WORDS)

the Identity field is defined as 12 Characters.

the OLD_ID field is defined as 120 Characters.

examnple of the contents of OLD_ID might read:
    "G-APDA,N1234,JA6701,F-BKML,G-BONE"

Any suggestions please. I would hate to "lose" the full text search as it is an answer to my main problems from Alpha4V6 days.

RE: System Problems whilst using Full Text Indexin

    Two possibilities occur to me:

When you 'tack' the identity value on to the end of the old_id field, do you first trim the existing value of old_id so that trailing blank spaces are removed *before* the new value is added at the end?

Does your 'tack' script check total field length of old_id before concatenating the two strings? i.e. when the total string length after 'tacking' is greater than the allowable field width for old_id what happens?

Yes Tom, the values are set correctly (I found out the hard way when I was running the same application under Alph4v6.

RE: System Problems whilst using Full Text Indexin

I have been updating with the "Full Text Index" still in place to see if a pattern emerges. All was well for the first 5 updates (changes to OLD_ID field), then spurious garbage started to appear in the IDENTITY Field, then 2 more updates and then on the next entry after typing in change *all* fields in the record where shown as blank!. So I moved to next record then back to the "empty" one, the fields then displayed the correct data. The next record I got "Program has done an illegal......" and A5 failed with a system abend as before. This time though, it also wipped off the Control Panel for the Database, that one really got the adrenalin going I can tell you. I nearly collected the prize for first PC into orbit!!!
After changing my underwear, I opened the Database and added all the tables, fortunately everything else came back as well. I think I will be kicking "Full Test Searching" into touch until somenone gives me a solution.
