Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Control Panel

I know that tabs can be hidden from the user, but is it possible to stop the user from getting to certian tabs.

Maybe use a password or something.

    Thanks for any help.

    RE: Control Panel

    Lloyd,

Your question is interesting and I assume you want the user to have access to some of the tabs. If so, I don't have the answer. (Sorry) If you don't want the user to have access to the control panel, it can be hidden. Try searching the message board using the following individually or in combinations:

Control Panel, Tabs, Hide Control Panel

I believe most anything you want the user to do that is done from the control panel can be accomplished by a bit of Xbasic on a button, etc.

    You might find your answer.

    Good Luck,

      Kenn

The user wants to be able to create reports. I don't want them to be able to get to the forms or operations tabs. I think someone ran one of the operations and corrupted the data.

Thanks for your reply I guess I will have to try to find another way around this.

        RE: Control Panel

        Lloyd,

One way around this is to right click on any of the tabs and deselect the Operations tab as well as any others you don't want the user to have access to. This will solve your problem UNLESS the user stumbles across the right click. If so, the barn doors will be wide open and if all the cattle get out of the barn........

Keep your users away from the control panel. To let them there is to court disaster.

If you want them to print reports, create a form with a bunch of buttons each of which prints a report. The built-in genies will code the buttons for you.

              FWIW,
I have a button on one of my forms that prints a report. The details of the report are checked to define the report filter when printed. This way I can search for and print any criteria from the table. The only drawback is the report layout is fixed; but, you could define various layouts and let the users pick the most appropriate one.

                RE: Control Panel

It is possible to access just the reports tab. I remembered that in A5V1 you could call the report editor card using the card_spawn command. I did this in one app to let the user create their own reports. Since some V1 syntaxt is still supported, I decided to give it a try and it does work. Here are the lines I used.

                filename = "co_test.dbf"
                card_spawn("report_editor","spawndb=~"+filename+"~")

The card will open the first report defined for the table "co_test". I password protected that form. If the user doesn't enter the correct password, a blank form is opened that the user can use for a custom form or use to select and open an existing form. Using a variable for the table name allows the programmer to set up a script to allow the user to select what table they want to use.

I haven't tried it, but I suspect you could also open other tabns using this V1 method.
